I just bought a new gaming laptop, and am wondering if closing the lid while gaming on second screen is a good idea.
I could keep it open but am just wondering.
The MSI GT73VR I have has great cooling and temps of both cpu and gpu rarely hit more than 70*C and the keyboard stays pretty cool all the time, but I suppose laptops cooling is designed with open screen in mind.

    Any thoughts?

You may be able to disable the lid switch, I'm not sure any air flows from the top., I would be interested in your results.

Compare temps with lid open and closed to see if it has any bearing on your component temps. But if keyboard remains cool to the touch while gaming, I'm sure it's not an issue. Hot air is vented out the back, so shouldn't have a bearing on the LCD. You can always stress the system too with the lid closed, open up the lid and quickly get temp data from the keyboard and/or LCD with a laser thermometer too. It likely won't see temps that high though, probably less than if you were to leave it in a bag sitting in the sun in your car.

If you system is pulling air from the bottom and blowing it out the back (which I believe the GT73 does) you should be fine. If I recall correctly that system runs pretty damn cool.

The GT73 doesn't draw air in, or blow it out, from the keyboard area, so having it closed doesn't matter.
