So, due to my m1530s screen being bad, I now have an option to get get the 1440x900.

I did play crysis demo at 1280 x 800 and didn't mind it a bit..to me it quite smooth. Now if I get the 1440x900 screen, would the game lag?

    Thanks a bunch!!

It might lag if you push the settings too high, 8600GT GDDR3 is capable of 1440x900 performance but take it easy with the settings for decent performance.

I would put it in the viewing angles. When I'm looking at the center of the screen and if I don't move my head and just look at the corners of the screen, they are significantly less bright.

Unless something is wrong with HIS screen in particular, there is nothing wrong with the 1530s screen. By bad, he, prob means its lower resolution, and the fact thats its not LED back lit. Which makes the screen less energy efficient.

There won't be much of a difference between those 2, at least not as much as going 1680x1050

TBH, if you have a 1680x1050 screen, 1280x800 seems to look better for some reason than 1440x900. Maybe it scales better?

It might. How well resolutions scale on LCD monitors is dependent on how the new resolution's pixels lay over the native resolution pixel grid.

Regarding the performance difference - in my experience, there is a significant decrease in performance going to 1440x900 from 1280x800 with cards that have 64-bit and 128-bit memory buses. It also depends on the game. I remember I had a laptop with a lower-end Go7400 card and while Counter-Strike: Source was laggy (mid-20s FPS) at 1440x900 it was more than playable at 1280x800.
1440x900 means about 20% more pixels to render than 1280x800.

I'm currently debating on whether buying a m1530 in 1440x900 vs 1280 x 800 resolution. For games, I understand that they tend to perform better in 1280, but would general text reading and such be better on a 1440x900 screen, and then I could decrease the resolution for gaming? Please gimme some advice =)

It depends a lot on your personal preference.

You may want to check out a local store and take a look at other 15.4" laptops. Play around with the resolutions to see which one suits your need overall. If you feel 1280 shows text well enough, the go for that one. :)

I suggest you buy a native 1440, and scale games down to 1280.

Yeah you can always downsize the resolution but when you buy the lower res screen you can't upsize your resolution on games that can handle it.

But on LCDs downsizing really screws up the display.

As someone else mentioned, the performance in games should roughly decrease by 20% as the video card would have to render 20% more pixels from 1280 to the higher resolution.

Why not get a laptop with a 14" screen instead. It's the biggest screen with a WXGA resolution most people would want. WXGA on a 15.4" sucks. As if I had to tell you that. Ehehe...

Anyway, talking from personal experience, the jump from 1440x900 to 1280x800 always gave me neglible performance increases. I'm just telling you this because 1440x900 is my preferred absolute minimum on a 15.4" and it's a waste to throw that additional screen estate away.

I would suggest the WXGA+. WXGA is a low resolution and as noted, you can always downsize the resolution but you can't increase it. WXGA+ will provide extra screen real estate for surfing the web and other applications. Well worth the price in my opinion.
