Anybody have any idea how the professional graphics cards (Quadro FX Go and Mobility FireGL) compare to consumer cards (Go 7x series and Mobility 1x series) for gaming and general use?

The Quadro and GeForce are based on the same chips.
The FireGL and Radeon are based on the same chips.

Find the Radeon/GeForce chip that your FireGL/Quadro is based on and it should give you roughly the same performance in games.

Minor performance differences and glitches may be present on default Quadro/FireGL drivers. You can just install the Radeon drivers (some tweaked sets like Omega drivers are available that give maximum gaming performance).

What are you going to do with the notebook? If you plan to game, don't get a workstation card - they are far more expensive than the standard chips which they are based on.
