ok i have been gaming a good while, with regards to multiplayer i have never had a problem whilst i was in the UK, 8mb connection with British Telecom.
i have come to spain for the summer and multiplayer is awful! i get average ping of 120 but every 10 seconds it will shoot up to over 1000 and i will be teleporting all over the place. i'm not sure if it's because i have downgraded to 3mb, because the internet is to our house via satellite/aerial or because spanish internet is just crap in general.

if anyone else is in spain and has bad internet for this, let me know
if not..... tell me what you think it is :S

Satellite is terrible for ping, I'm guessing that is the cause.

Yeah, satellite is pretty unreliable. It's ok for web browsing, downloading, but not for gaming.

Gaming is really all about ping/latency not pure bandwidth.

Most games have a pretty efficient net code that does not require a lot of overhead (bandwidth) but the speed in wich your computer communicates with the game server and the other players is incredibly important and thats what the ping/latency is measuring.

Satellite due to the nature of how it works has bad pings/latency, really no way around it other than a different connection method.

there are softwares that can attempt to make connections that arnt as good better, Im not sure if gamebooster does this at all, but its worth a shot. Of course there's gaming NIC(network interface controller) that can attempt to correct this as well. Have a look around on satellite, there may be something that can correct your problem. I do know though from first hand expierence that satellite connections can be a tough work around gaming wise.

I was hoping that satellite wasn't really going to be horribly bad, as I'm most likely going to be forced on to it in the next couple of years. It's either that or 3G wireless. They're ripping out our copper. :(

    It's not looking good.

Software alone cannot fix inherent hardware problems. That applies to both satellite internet and gamebooster.

Well satellite has been out a long time. I figured there might have been some type of advancements.

Sure, advancements have been made to the hardware, but my point is that it's going to have to be a hardware fix not a software fix. And regarding satellite, there isn't much that they can do to fix the inherent lag - beaming data around to satellites takes time.

Given the choice, and the priority being gaming, I´d go with 3G. When I moved, I passed almost 2 years with 3G only until I could get a decent ADSL conection. Although not stellar, I could multiplayer just fine, even FPSs, and with Teamspeak.

Nope, Sky broadband is ADSL I think. The TV is satellite but they offer ADSL on LLU exchanges IIRC.

I was looking around at came across someone that bought this router and helped his satellite to where it was compleatly playable. Here is the persons review
Its the Linksys Wireless-N Gigabit Gaming Router WRT330N Wireless router. Here is where its at. Its expensive, but it acts as a few other things as well as being a gaming router. Im sure you could get it for much cheaper with some kind of deal if you pushed a bit, or through dell maybee for hundread something or less.

we have a very good Cisco Linksys router so it's deffo not that, but thanks for letting me know

we've actually be ringing up the isp constantly and my dad has very good 'im calm but annoyed' attitude and they have replaced a lot of parts in their system. now it runs pretty darn well, but still drops out quite a bit for a few minutes at a time.
