I'm sure it been asked, haven't seen much about it, on these forums, but according to what I've been able to find online, there's not much difference in gaming performance between these 2 OS's.

Getting ready to install new cpu and gpu and was going to upgrade to Windows 7, but it seems there's no gain as far as gaming goes. And actually Vista is fine with me as is, so convince me I need Win 7 !

I'd recommend upgrading to Windows 7 unless you really low on cash. The overall improvements to the interface and associated responsiveness are really worthwhile, even if they don't show up in synthetic benchmarks. The OS truly feels faster than Vista, but you wont see a huge increase in FPS over Vista.

Most of the improvements to the various components in the OS, such as the way memory is allocated to UI elements, are worthwhile improvements.

    His sig says Vista 64.

To answer the OP, you're not gonna see a difference in gaming performance between Vista and 7. You WILL see a difference in overall experience of the OS though. But TBH if I were you, I'd stay with vista.

If you play Age of Empires II, stick with Windows Vista, else you should switch to Windows 7 (you won't see much of a difference in games, but otherwise it's a better OS).

Money is not the issue as far as purchasing a copy of Win 7. I'm installing Quadro 3700m and a T9300 and just didn't want to be a taking a step backwards by installing a new OS !

Oh then definitely get it. Windows 7 is what vista should've been.
It's not gonna be a step backwards by any mean.

The difference in gaming performance, if any, is negligible. But overall, Windows 7 is a superior OS to Vista in pretty much every way. It feels much more snappy and responsive. There used to be a tangible delay in Vista for me when I would navigate folders in Windows Explorer, which is completely instantaneous in 7, for example.

    Here's my experience:

I had an Acer laptop specs: AMD Athlon 64 1.6GHz, 3GB DDR2, X1200 video card.

When I bought it, it had Vista Home Basic on it. I installed Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2, and it wasn't playable, FPS around 15.

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate RC 7600, and it upped the FPS in GR2 to about 25 FPS, just about playable.

Get Windows 7, having tested it extensively on the Sager 9050, as I was dual booting both Vista Ultimate 64bit and Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and testing games on each, I will tell you the difference was quite noticeable. I had a video done of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat demo running on both Vista Ultimate 64bit and Win 7 Ultimate 64bit and the difference there was really noticeable in DX10. I also had a video comparing Street Fighter 4 demo (awful game), unfortunately I lost both videos, when y full Windows 7 install came in I was anxious to move on and did it immediately forgetting quite a bit was saved on my drive. So in my opinion I say go for it, I much prefer Windows 7 anyway.

Like already pointed out: win7 feels much better responsive/optimized/stable than Vista. For sure you'll not regret the upgrade.
