This is getting to be a very popular laptop on these forums, but I haven't seen anyone at all talk about using it with an external monitor and playing games at high resolutions. I purchased the laptop to be a replacement for my top of the line, watercooled beast of a desktop, but was a little worried about how it would perform in comparison. Last night I finally got around to setting the laptop up at my desk with my external monitors. Right now it's connected to a 28" Hanns-G over HDMI and a 22" Westinghouse over VGA. Dualview works great in this setup with the laptop clamshell closed. I'm obviously using a USB keyboard/mouse setup. Before work today I decided to try out some CoD4 on my 28" and see how the laptop would perform compared to my old desktop (Core 2 Duo @ 3.2GHz, 8GB DDR2-800, 8800GT). I didn't have time to take record FPS or anything as I was in a bit of a hurry (as always) but I can give my initial impressions:

These settings were used while playing on a full 32-person server:

At 1920x1200, all in-game details max, noAA - I'd guess that average FPS was around 30fps, maybe a little lower. There was the very slightest of hitching, but I would say that these settings were 90% playable.

At 1920x1200, all in-game details max, shadows disabled, noAA - Felt exactly as my desktop did. I'd say average FPS was in the mid 40s. I didn't feel any hitching, slowness or lag. These settings are 100% playable.

When I get home from work, or maybe on my lunch, I'll play some and mess with the settings more, along with getting FPS numbers. But from my initial impressions, this laptop as SWEET, even for hi-res, gorgeous gaming. I don't miss my desktop one bit. Well, maybe I do miss the noise that the 4 150CFM 120mm fans made. Oh wait, no...

This right here gets me excited. I am sure I will be hooking this up to my 32" HDTV when I get it.

Question...have you replaced the processor yet? Or have you yet to do the upgrade?

the 8800m GTS is very powerful and should not have problems with most if not all games(except crysis) at max or near max settings at that res.
