The real problem is overheating. The Gateway P-6831 fx overheats after dust buildup gradually stocks your vents.
The drivers help. Having XP helps. All these other mediocre solutions simply reduce the heat load.
THE GATEWAY IS FINALLY FIXXED.
The real problem is the heat. And to fix this take a can of compressed air, make sure to not be too close, as to avoid leeking fluid into the laptop, and blow it into the sides and under the laptop, this should rid of most of the dust, and allow you to play crash free. I still prop my laptop on top of a book, as well, since I usually have the highest settings enabled.
But finally this darn mystery is solved.
Please repost this and spread the word as much as possible. Heesh, thank goodness, cause Gateway sure as hell wasn't quick to fix anything.

I will admit, I haven't tried airing out the vents of my M-6864 FX. But I do run undervolted and use a cooling pad. I now have the 8.11 drivers thanks to Mobility Modder. My CPU temp rarely exceeds 75, even while gaming. Knowing that my GPU is close to the core I figured the GPU couldn't be much hotter. But who knows, maybe I should just get in there and spray. It truly is my last option. (If indeed my problem is heat related).

Dust clogging the exit vent killed my sister's Inspiron 5150. I guess the P-6831FX also has a poor design.
