I thought i would have been able to run this game at acceptional speeds, but.. Its Soooo laggy not even playing on line and its laggy.. The god damn Main Menu of the game is laggy! Could this have something to do with the game? Or is it my rig?
-
-
It's definitely not your rig that's the problem. Most likely a driver problem.
-
Also make sure you have the newest patches. Far Cry runs on max on a 8600m GT.
-
I agree with the above.
hmmm... on a more unlikely note, and this may seem silly, but you may have a small virus -
What power settings are your computer set at? Could the processor speedstepping be causing this?
-
-Power Settings are on "High Performance"
-I know its not a virus..
-Duh! That makes sense! I may need to update it with a patch, thanks Lithus. I pulled this game of my old External HD lol I'm dying to play it again!
(Edit: Hmm it says i have v1.4 patch already..? Thats the newest one right? I can't seem to find a newer version..)
-I don't think its a Driver problem because i'm running the newest Vista 32bit: 165.01 -
You are also only running 1.5 gig ram. Farcry takes up about a gig, and Vista is taking a good 750mb leaving you with mega page files. Not only is your videocard going to eat battery life but your hdd will too. Drivers are most likely your problem. Visit laptopvideo2go.com and get the newest one for vista32. But you should also consider replacing your 512 stick with a one gig IMO.
Good luck -
yea i got a 2gig commin in the mail from newegg.com, I have the most recent driver available soo... idk
-
Fine, I'll get farcry for my fl90 and I'll try it out.
I have the almost the same setup as you. -
It's not a RAM problem. Vista does not take up 750 Mb of RAM, and you can't add it up that way. Vista uses about 400 Mb, and that's when running Vista. If you put a full screen game up, the game takes priority, and most of the RAM that Vista is using will be released for the game. I'm sure you can run Far Cry with 1 GB of RAM easily.
-
well i can run it on a 1.7 gig pent 4, 1gig of ram and an x700 all onn the highest settings...a lil laggy...but you for sure can run it on highest settings no prob

Weird.. Mine is patched (the new ad-supported download), running on 163.67's and I couldn't touch max with a 10 foot pole. Playing with lighting, shadows and water quality bumped down one notch. I think it would help if I could actually disable AA, but the game looks terrible without it and the game resets that setting to on and locks it every time anyway.
-
Strange, I thought I had written a post to reply. Looks like it never updated.
Anyway, I have your exact same specs except that my laptop is the Inspiron 1720 with the 17" WUXGA screen (also I only have 2GBs of RAM).
I just finished Far Cry and it was the singularly most spectacular FPS I have ever played since Quake incepted the true 3-D genre (Doom doesn't count!). The graphics are stunning and the immersiveness of the huge maps just totally sucked me in.
I had no problems running Far Cry and I was even using the latest Dell drivers and not the 163.44 version. The system even ran FC at 1920*1200 at Very High settings, although it was a tad choppy (BEAUTIFUL!). I played the entire game at 1280*1024 with High settings and the eye candy was more than enough for me.
Have you tried turning Vsync off? That's an FPS hog. But this screws up the use of AA?
Two problems I ran into while playing Far Cry:
1) The Map Rebellion refused to load. Rebellion is the largest map in FC (probably the largest map in FPS history) and I think the 8600M GT just gave up. I found a workaround by bumping resolution down to 800*600 (still at High settings) and loading the map. This allowed the map to load and I just bumped resolution back up to 1280*1024 in-game.
2) Several times, the game just froze and either worked fine again after 5 seconds or dumped me out to the desktop. FC kills your graphics card and you can feel the hot air and cooler fan whir increase dramatically when the game is being played. It didn't really affect me that much, but quite irritating after you have killed scores of Tridgen and Fat Boy only to see the desktop.
Oh and I finished it on Hard and I'm trying Nightmare now. Insanely difficult!

I have the same experience.
Seems 8X00M GT series is very buggy,
and cannot coordinate well with the T7300 cpu,
is limiting the performance. -
hey, guys, just happened to install it tonite, everything seems to run pretty good, except for the mouse. i can use it in the main menu, but it just doesn't work in the game... does anyone have that problem....updated to ver 1.4...
-
yeah i'm having that problem also! Not only does it lagg really bad but i can't turn eith the mouse it won't let me.. I can run HL2: Lost Coast at highest settings but can't play freaking Far Cry? There has to be something with the game. I now know it has nothing to do with my rig...
-
yeah, for sure...did u buy the game or dnload it? cuz i did the second one
put everything on high, doesn't seem to lag a bit , but can't use the mouse....
-
For the mouse bug, try going to the controls menu and press "Reset to default".
Remember reading it somewhere, hope that works. -
thanx, man, i'll try it out and post back...
edit: it did work for me, thanx a lot, man! -

I'm going to try without Vsync and see if that makes a difference. However, at max FPS is great in most cases, but in combat it can hit a choppy 20-25 FPS. Some people find this acceptable- my friend on my PC, for instance- but I prefer the 35-40 in combat situations I get now with lowered settings. Its just an anal preference thing, I guess.
What levels of AA and AF are you guys applying at "max"? What I am referring to as max is highest settings in each catagory, and then I applied at least 2x AA and 2x AF on top of that ("enhance" setting in the nVidia control panel). I believe its playable at max with no AA or AF, but the jaggies could take my eyes out.
I think its a Vista x64 issue. I should be getting better FPS. I'm having trouble with older games like this- W:ET for example, probably 5 years old and barely playable at max. I think its just a memory addressing issue. -
Turning vsync off really increases the frame rate of the system, but it does produce tearing artifacts on the screen. If you are highly perceptive of AA jaggies, non-vsync graphics will drive you nuts. I never play with vysnc or AA because the FPS boost is far more critical for me than eye candy.
BTW, are you updated to the 163.44 driver version? I just updated it last night, ran Far Cry again and I noticed a significant FPS boost such that the 1920*1200 resolution was pretty playable.

I'm at 163.67 right now, waiting on 163.69 modded drivers for some ET:QW goodness
.
I turned on vsync because of tearing issues. If the choice is going to between slightly lower settings or screen tearing, I guess I'll have to stick with lower settings >< -
check out the best drivers for 8600 thread, swoley put out the new drivers, about to check them out in a min.

Remember to also put HDR lighting on and there's also option for higher AF levels (8x and 16x). These must be set in the config file or with the configuration tool, not in-game (how? see here). HDR looks very nice outdoors but indoors it's a bit flawed, since it's too "blinding". AA is by no means necessary if you use high enough resolution (>1280x800), which looks far better than low resos with AA.
-
When you go onto laptopvideo2go.com please look at the date the driver was posted, not the driver number. While 165.01 is the highest numerical value listed, it was released almost 6 months ago. 163.44 or even 162.18 would be superior options. I'm using 163.44 and things are working great.
You'll also notice a significant increase in performance.
UPDATE THOSE DRIVERS! -
ShadowoftheSun Notebook Consultant
@ ronkotus: Forcing HDR is no longer possible in 163.44 or beyond. Is there a dedicated option in the options menu?
-
@ShadowoftheSun: No, not in the in-game menu, HDR must be enabled in the cofiguration file. Higher AF can be enabled with the configuration tool. See the link i posted.

These kinds of posts is whrere I need a big XBOX360 stamp!
You guys humor me... -
-
i had a same problem but after several reinstallations and updates + patches now i run FC on 4xAF+1200x800 everything on max with over 30 fps per second.
And thats with a x1600 which has only 64 bit memory bus -
screw 360...
