most likely not....the only graphics cards that "appear" to be defective are the 8600 and 8400 series

I'm trying to figure this out as well.

My idle/load temperatures have suddenly jumped in the last week.

    Initially they were:
    Idle: ~52-55 C
    Load: ~69-72 C

    Now...
    Idle: ~60-69 C
    Load: ~78-82 C

I just opened the back of my laptop and blew out the dust but there was little to no change. The only thing I can think of is maybe something happened when I took my laptop on a ski trip for a couple of days?

Also, the CPU/HDD temps are the same as before.

As far as I know, the 8600 and 8400 are defective. The 9 series do heat up a bit (the GT ones), but not too high. I think the 9500M GS is safe, my friend has had it for long (exact same laptop as you), and he's never had problems with it overheating.

I agree - use the laptop and don't worry about anything. If for some reason the card fails, you can get your laptop replaced under warranty.

    The defective gpu's where the G84m and G86m gpu's.
8400m G, 8400m GS, 8400m GT, 8600m GS, 8600m GT, 8700m GT, and the 9500m GS are all based off one of those two cores. Check gpu-z to see if it says G84m.

As pointed out don't worry, my temps are up 10C from when i bought my laptop a year ago(in a few days - happy b-day lappy :D) and i still oc the hell out of it :D

    For now I wouldn't worry.
Though I must caution that a 9500m GS is simply a renamed 8600m GT.
Meaning, there is a possibility that the card will suffer from thermal cycling issues ... although it's not definitive.

All other 9xxx series are supposedly not affected by those issues (unless they are renamed cards from the 8xxx series with no revisions).

    This is getting absurd.
    Question:
Why is Nvidia allowing these kinds of stupidities out in the market to begin with?
They are one of the main gpu production companies in the industry and they have virtually an entire line (and generations) of gpu's that are failing due to bad manufacturing.

Well, at least I should be getting back to UK fairly soon (where my warranty doesn't expire for 2 years).
Will be backing up most of the data on my hdd just in case as well ... still, I hope there won't be too many issues with my 9600m GT GDDR3 given the fact I also use a Zalman NC-2000B beneath my laptop (have had from about 2 weeks after getting my laptop).

As if simple renaming (no revisions to fix the thermal cycling issues) of their gpu's isn't idiotic enough. They aren't doing anything to fix their products.

This thread is getting absurd! It's only the G86m & G84m cores that were reported to be defective. There's always a chance you'll get a faulty componant no matter what your buying; laptop, mobile phone, toaster etc.
    Nvidia gpu's are great, i have a 8400m GT(G86m) and i don't regret buying the laptop for a second!
Just play your games, keep half an eye on temps and forget about defective cores and thermal cycles.
