Hi I really need to know which graphics card will be better for me. I will mainly be working with CAD programs such as CATIA and will NOT use my laptop for gaming at all. I know the GeForce series is designed for gaming.

If you're not gaming at all then the obvious choice is the quadro. You can always install Geforce-equivalent drivers to game if you decide to do so.

I'd say that the geforce would be better, due to having sooooo much more raw power. However, driver optimizations may tip the favour towards the Fx1600m, or at least make up for the difference.

It may be possible for you to use quadro drivers on the 9800m GTS, and then there is no choice but that.

I believe there is not at the moment but if you can wait hold out a bit before buying and there may be a Quadro variant comming out.

Guess i have to retract my earlier reply about the Quadro, however if the right professional drivers aren't available for the Geforce it might not be worthwhile for the professional applications used by the OP.

Also note that the FX1600 is a power hungry video card. 50 watt if I'm not mistaken.

Apart from the sheer power of the Geforce, the Quadro by default is designed to work with professional applications like AutoCAD.

It depends at which level do that imo. At raw power, it's (the equivalent of) GF 8600GT VS 9600GT. I don't know if the optmised-drivers can make up for that.

what is the smallest laptop that will use the 9800M GTS?

any chance of a 9800M GTS being found in a 14" chassis, after all it does only have two thirds the transistors of the G92 based mobile chips.........?

Unlikely, no recent high-end card has been installed in anything less than a 15" chassis.

Although the quadro is meant for CAD and such, we use nvida geforce cards in our CAD workstations here (7950GTX) and they do 3d CAD with great ease.
