    ok yeah, looking at getting a laptop, the graphics card options are between those two, now i have looked at many websites and they are both head to head. just looking for opinions.

    this is the only thing that is stoping me from buying my laptop... for gaming obviously, so please give input.

    from most real world reviews both work well but the ati edges out the nvidia... plus the ati tends to run a bit cooler

    right now the big kid on the block is the ati 5870m

    the ATI 5870 beats a single GTX285M easily... not to mention its newer tech and is DirectX 11... i would get 5870...

    At this point, there's no real reason to even consider the GTX285M unless you really need Physx for a specific game or you happen to be dating the daughter of the president of Nvidia...

    The card that runs cooler in theory is the 5870 but it also comes down to whether the design of the chassis and its cooling system are up to scratch or not in practice. In summary, get the 5870.

    For gaming, 5870MR is definitely better, but as for work that uses CUDA... wait for the 480M.

    I found your previous statement quite amusing and did have an audible chuckle, but I would appreciate if you explained yourself so that I may fully understand your desired message.
    :D

    On topic:

    5870> 285M >= 5850

    Fact.

    I have decided to buy the desktop counter part HD5970 and run it in the Aurora case. I have a samsung LED 6 series 46inch TV , upcoming Crysis II should look good on it.
