I was about to ask if that is even possible. But if Nvidia did it, then maybe we could also use the same clocks and voltage on a 580m and see if it is stable. Maybe it is a lottery game...Just my guess again

i know one guy that pushed his 580m to 850 core, and 2000 memory, but he had a custom powersupply. thats faster than a gtx 560ti, if i do declare.

15-20% is not a small overclock for a highend graphics card.

675m is just a rebranded 580m so everything is same(core speeds, shader count...) so why 675m is faster(%5) than 580m? everything is same, how is it possible?
-
Probably because the benches you have seen of GTX 580M was done ages ago, but the benches with GTX 675M was done with newer drivers which again give slightly better results

Really confused betwween GTX 675M and AMD 7970... is AMD really worth 200 USD premium over 675M ????
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Basically, the 675m is a rebadged 580m - their performance is pretty much identical. The 7970m is insanely more powerful than the 675m but does have its fair share of driver headaches right now. I would be confident that they do get resolved but there is no exact timeframe as to when they will be better supported. I would still spend the extra over 675m for 7970m right now BUT, 680m is literally days away and that might be another option for you to consider as performance is reported to be on par or slightly better than 7970m and may welll have better driver support "out the box"....price unknown yet but definetly worth waiting for so you can make a fully informed decision. -
7970M is already officially supported in drivers.
-
Thanks steviejones133... was going over other posts and currently people are saying that 680M would cost approx 495 USD more then 675M !! that means approx 300 USD more then AMD 7970M. you have justified the 200 USD gap between 675M and 7970m coz 7970 is quite powerful then 675M. but will there be same diff between 7970M and 680M? (keeping in view the price diff
.
One small other qstn:- say i have an AMD card but now want to upgrade with NIVIDA.. is is possible?? or do in have to get only AMD card?? in other words, is it possible to upgrade AMD with Nivida and vice versa?? -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
The gap wont be as wide between 7970m / 680m - both cards will be beastly in terms of power. The big jump is from 675m to either 7970m/680m....its MASSIVE, hence it's worth it in terms of cost/performance ratio.
You can upgrade from AMD to Nvidia and vice-versa quite easily - if your adding a gpu, you just need the correct heatsink and SLI/Crossfire cable. If you are changing from say, a single AMD gpu to Nvidia, you would need the new cards/heatsinks/SLI cable and vice versa. -
this means AMD 7970 is the best bang for money currently. but i ve heard about the driver and reliability issues of AMD over nivida. as i will be using this notebook in India, getting reliable and long lasting parts are essential for me coz i wont be able to upgrade or get it properly serviced (only cleaning and general stuff) at least for a year. Also Im not a tech person, hence im trying to get something which will not need any tweaking or tempering till its back for service. Thus the reliability is a big issue for me. would u suggest AMD over nivida?? -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
I agree with that - bang for buck, it has to be the 7970m. The main thing that would put me off them (and has done) is the lack of any kind of "ownership" of the AMD Driver support problems by either AMD or Dell. Neither organisation has released a fully functional Driver for these cards yet and I see many people complaining about this and that not working or functioning...this is not something I expect when shelling out such a large chunk of cash. Problem after problem.
Historically, Nvidia driver support has been far better than AMD. Not to say that they arent guilty of releasing some crud themselves in the past but just not as much as AMD, in my humble opinion.
I've owned both AMD and Nvidia systems - from a personal viewpoint, my experience with Nvidia has been pretty damn perfect on the whole but my experience with AMD which included 5870m, 6970m and 6990m was pretty dismal.
So, if I were a betting man, I would put my money on Nvidia being a safer, more stable bet than AMD right now and that's going on past and present.
Are Nvidia's worth the huge amount extra for maybe 5% performance gain? - probably not but some people will think they are because of the somewhat more stable experience with them vs. AMD and the added benefits of CUDA and PhysX. -
Point 01: 675M is not worth it
Point 02: AMD 7970 is best deal but without good after purchase and driver support , dosnt seems so appealing...
Point 03: 680M is the answer but the premium over 7970M is huge !! i dont mind spending a little more but approx 300 USD more just for 5% increase is a bit much to digest
i can go with 7970M but if anything goes wrong or without proper support, will be hanging on a wire and wriggling all the time. On the other hand 680M will put end to these sufferings but demands a lot to do so....
in a nutshell, keeping my scenario in mind (dont have proper service center in whole country for this system if anything goes wrong !!) most probably will have to send it back to US for service and repairs (shudder)... no computer geek in 50 miles of me to whom i can turn for help if needed!! is it justified to go for 680M over 7970M? also i understand that 680M will be able to handle almost everything in the market for next 02 years -

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works! - personally, If I had the money (or will) to buy 680m, I would over AMD - based on my own experiences.
Put it like this - its all well and good having a powerful gpu but it is rather pointless if it doesnt work properly.
AMD may well get things sorted out in the near future but I am not a gambling man and I wouldnt like to put a timeframe on this getting resolved.. -
as u said its pointless to get something if it dsnt works properly... -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Well, the driver situation with AMD might have been resolved by then - if not it would only strengthen my will to not buy AMD. If it IS fixed, great. You then have the choice of either 7970m at a lower price with similar performance or going 680m. If you are waiting a month or so, it wil also give you an insight into how the 680m performs and if they have any issues or not.
Patience is a virtue! - rushing in with both feet first is sometimes not the best idea....especially when parting with substantial amounts of cash! - also, given your situation regarding getting things fixed, it would be wise, in my opinion, to wait and see which is the best stable solution for your needs. Its often the case that "early adopters" of new tech run the risk of that technology working 100% right away....typical example is 7970m right now....I prefer to wait and see how it works. -
chk this out....
On dell website, The option is either for 7970 crossfire or 680M (300 USD)
The Dell Online Store: Build Your System
that IS too mch -
Not to discredit steviejones, but do not base your decision on one person's experience. I have used AMD and nvidia as well and I did not have problems with either. In fact, IIRC, I had more driver crashes in nvidia. AMD is not going to give you a bad part. Dell's driver support is very good for the AMD card. So I do not see any reason to worry. The GPU drivers are not released by AMD for the 7970m. They are released by Dell.
Secondly, if you are not going the crossfire way, why do you need the M18x? It offers nothing different from the M17x other than a slightly larger screen the difference to which, you probably won't notice. -
I just bought the Sammy series 7 gamer. Seems to me the gtx 675m plays games fantastically. I suppose if the package you want supports 7970m and you can deal with driver woes for a while it's fine.
I'd rather play my games than chase benchmarks. Even metro 2033 is running fine with a good amount of settings cranked up.
Edit: omg bad auto complete typos. Damn you new Swype beta.

-

Regards who MAKES the drivers, sorry but you are wrong. It is AMD who provide reference drivers (or as Luis refers to them as BASE drivers) and OEM's such as Dell simply "tweak" them to fit their own systems. Even Dell say the same below:
-
I don't want to spend that much on a laptop to get a 680M, gaming just not that important to me. And I'm not going to get another 40nm GPU in 2012, that's just weird. I don't understand why the 675M is a Fermi and not a Kepler. If it was a Kepler, I would have probably gotten that over 7970M.
Drivers are both ways. Both nvidia and AMD have their issues, and firmly do not believe either to be superior. Anyone who says otherwise truly believe is just spreading Fud. -
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2 -
Also, that problem you mention is restricted to a very very small section of the market. The single 7970m drivers are excellent.
Finally, did you notice how Arkham City's name popped up? What do we know about the sponsor of that title? Desktop crossfire setups have also have problem with Arkham City and quite a few other nvidia sponsored games. I have no source for this so anyone reading this can do their own research and reach a conclusion but there is more than one title out there that crossfire has trouble running and every one of them is supported by nvidia (the little "nvidiaaaaa" thing plays at the beginning of it).
EDIT: Also, thanks for the info on the driver provider. I thought drivers were largely completely OEM. -
how much performance increase 675 have over my 460?
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Just because the 7970m works OK in single gpu setup, doesnt mean AMD drivers are all of a sudden "great".....it's not just Batman AC from what I have read, and it's not just "TWIMTBP" titles either....Crossfire is broken on a larger scale - it may not be an issue if you dont have a dual gpu setup - certainly is a BIG deal if you do.
As I said before, I am not a fan of either brand. My loyalty goes to those who make the best product and provide the best support for it. Judging by AMD's lack (or extremely slow response) to this problem doesnt inspire confidence in them or their product and that is why I commented from a personal perspective as I did.
BTW, your more than welcome for the driver information -

looking at reviews it's 2 times faster
Mafia2 35 vs 62 fps
Metro 2033 9 vs 17 fps
Crysis 2 18 vs 35
etc
so it's worth for me to replace my laptop for somethink with 675 -
Heck, I reckon in 2 year time the 675m will look like how the pentium 4 did to a qx6700. Theres a reason why I keep posting not to get the 675m or 670m. I would advise you getting a 680m though. Its quite funny the 680m should offer double the performance of the 675m in dx11 games and the 680m should take less power consumption.
In another way to say it is a 675m takes around 220w to stop it throttling, 7970m takes 166w and performs 80% better. I reckon the 680m will take around 190w.
One final note: you will need at least a 220w adaptor for a 675m. -
ok but 680 will cost a fortune
-
The GTX 675M should be a very good card, able to play any games on ultra-ish setting.
I have a custom desktop with AMD Radeon which was the fastest AMD back then (gave to my Mom still excellent condition) and a custom desktop also with NVidia 8800 GTS, ..and a laptop with NVidia 460M (3 computers).
My ASUS G73SW with the 460M gave me nothing BUT super excellent performance and super easy driver installs. Every NVidia driver for my 460M whether beta or whql has ZERO issues and this is the TRUTH!
There is no game that my 460M can't play at 1080p ultra-ish/high. You name it, ..TW2, Crysis 2, Metro 2033, BF3, Deus X HR, Skyrim, D3, Rage etc.. Granted that The Witcher 2 is more demanding specially on forested areas, but at 900p it's averaging 50-60 FPS. I am talking OC'ed, even lowered OC'ed..
My preference for the GTX 680M though comes from my experiences with the GTX 460M. And since M18X finally has the 680m..
A single 7970m is a super card, but to bash the 675m is obviously has blemished intent IMO..
It's like "Get the Hyundia Genesis" it's cheaper and has great power compared to an "Infiniti G37 or G35 coupe" which is more expensive and maybe less power, due to HP to weight ratio..
GPUs' are personal preference, and everyone has to accept that.
Sample screens from my 460M.. All 1080p ultra-ish..
...My 460m does 2400 3dMark 11, so I could just picture how the 675M will have more, more FPS than my 460m.
680m has roughly 2x the performance though compared to the 675m. It's also about one's budget.

I don't think you got my point a 675m is still 2010 mobile technology. Its just revised unified shaders more higher clocks and the most extreme power consumption and heat they can get away with in a laptop basically. There was 480m/485m and the 580m which is basically a 675m is just revised versions slightly better.
At the end of the day if people ran lets a say had a 7950gx2 just because it outferorms an integrated gpu 5 years later then you will be using 300w computer which a 40w system performs similar to. The most basic gt 620m performs similar to a 7950gx2 and a gt 620m is basically a 10w card. -
Oh boy here we go again.
-
The reason I got the 675m is because I liked the Samsung series 7 gamer, it was only $1790, I liked the classier look, though i could do without the rings that pulse to the sound output. Not that I notice them during gameplay. It's quiet, runs pretty cool, ivy bridge, 16GB ram, two 750G drives, 8G express cache will hold me over till I get an ssd, phenomenal 120Hz display panel, an Intel wireless card already in (6235), bluray already in. It hit the right notes for me price and features wise. So far I have not been unhappy at all with the performance. If you can spend the extra money I would definitely suggest the 7970M or 680M obviously.
I'm just hoping I can upgrade the gpu down the road when I feel like the 675M isn't cutting it anymore.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2 -
I just read hothardware troll the fermi machine saying the new kepler gpu and ivy bridge processor allowed for the slimmer power supply.
Also imo when I saw the samsung gamer laptop I thought it looked cheap and very old design. It looks like a laptop that tries to look business but looks cartoony and the big light for the on button makes it look funny.
M17xr4 looks more classier, I personally think if you disable the lights the m17x would look good as a business machine and enable the lights for gaming if you can do that and you can change colour lights as well. Its like a portable gaming laptop what people buy desktops for as in lights and performance and design all in one. -
My old tech mobile GPU (only 2400 3DMark 11 score) plays all these games at ultra-ish 1080p, and you can see the FPS count. Averaging 80*-84*C max GPU temp.. That is the TRUTH!
BF3 at 1080p on my 460M, Ultra texture, low post AA, 4X AF averages 80*C Max GPU temp. after 4 hrs of gaming online. 40-55 FPS on a 48 player TDM. That's Old Technology.
A 675m does 3400 3DMark 11 + 400-500 points when OC'ed vs my 2400 score OC'ed.
Old technology or not, the 675M will play it no problem with some little to med. OC.
And by 3 yrs. time we usually get another gaming laptop because we just like to change. -
okay lets say its summer its 30 degrees hot and what would you prefer a 675m or 7870m slightly oc'd.
7870m machine oc'd with quad cpu gaming with similar performance to 675m takes 120w vs 217w for the 675m and even then the 675m throttles as it is thirsty for more power.
Do you remember when core 2 duo came out and embarrased its own pentium d and pentium 4 based on 65nm. Thats basically what the performance and power consumption and tdp difference is.
675m is lets say pentium d at 3.4ghz 95w vs 660m which is lets say a 1.06ghz 10w core 2 duo cpu. Now this is an extreme way but this is actually on same technology 65nm. Now that was amazing how much performance per watt on same nm was done.
My point is though a laptop with new technology will last far longer. Also most likely if you have a 675m requiring around 180-220w just to do something a 90-120w machine can do 10-20% worse what would you prefer. -
For me and probably most, it's all about a stable gaming system.
I am are currently sitting at 30-32*C outside right now during afternoons, summer in Canada. I play inside my centralized condo.
I'm OC'ed at only 797/1650 and I'm playing all these games at 1080p without any single crash.
So why would I complain if all my games aren't crashing and my FPS are from 40-60 FPS, except The Witcher 2 on forested scene at 1080p.
By the way Nissan GTR, can I ask you about your Nissan GT-R? I'm interested really on what A/F ratio you run on your Nissan GTR on top on your 2nd gear? I like the GT-R too, I only have a G35 coupe :-( -
I had my 460m since May 2011, I've never encountered Throttling ever, ..truth!!
Also isn't this all about able to play games stable at 1080p with good FPS and good GPU temp?
If a weaker 460M that has the same tech as a 675M does this, how does the 675m reflects all this? -
I have air conditioners, none of this summer heat talk is relevant to me. I'm sure it is to others though.
It's almost like it's a crime to be happy with the 675. I don't get it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2 -
You have a 675M? I will call the cops because you didn't buy the other card..
-
Seriously? You do know is just the difference between a 100w tdp and 75w tdp, right? The power usage is not going to be THAT different. Maybe 30w max on the same laptop build. TDP doesn't speak to true power usage, but there's no way just switching out between the two gpu is going to be a 90-100w difference.
Point is too extreme.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2 -
Firstly, to be honest I have no idea how you are coming up with these wattage numbers. It is almost impossible to calculate the actual power used by any part in the laptop unless you take a DMM to the power rail, connect its ground to the ground rail and measure the current. This, I doubt has been done.
Secondly, let it go with the 675m. You are swarming this forum every time someone mentions purchasing the 675m. It is their money and their problem. They do not think $100 is worth the performance jump. To someone who does not mind going down to 900p in a year and then may be reducing a couple of settings, the 675m is a good fit. It is not old tech. You make it sound as if they are purchasing an old Matrox. For some, the most powerful GPU is the WEAKEST GPU that gets the job done. Also, like many others have told you (including myself), power consumption when playing video games is a useless statistic. For idle/low load scenarios, most 675m systems if not all come with Optimus. Electricity is a few cents a kWh and I don't think anyone here minds paying a few cents after playing for 5 hours. -
Did the new Verde 304 drivers cause any problems to any other 675M owners? I've been playing Skyrim and Borderlands, and the games became very unstable after the update. Borderlands would even dip into the 15fps range. I had to go back to driver 295, I was looking forward to the new drivers.
@Theif, what settings are you using for BF3? Are you maxing out the ultra settings? I only get about 25-30fps with everything maxed.
