Which of the two is better? the 7400 has a turbo cache which enable you to share more memory? but its only 64 bit whilst the 7800 is 256 bit with a speed of 35.2 GB/s vs 7.2 of the 7800.. A bit confused here now.. anything else that would be faster for my laptop? (asus build)

GeForce Go 7800 GTX with no doubt. It's the most powerful video card you can find in a laptop. It is also one of the most expensive...
-
Keep in mind that while the 7400 is "sharing" from you system RAM, it's taking that away from your system to use.
As Vader said, the 7800GTX is a beast, and leaps and bounds more powerful than the 7400. Check out this link from Chazman which further explains things:

7800 and 7400 are in different leagues.
7800 is a high end card whereas the 7400 is a couple levels down and performance. the 7800 is a hell lot more powerful, but also sucks up more battery life like a hungry, fat vampire -
ok thanks chaps. I read the stickies but the share memory /turbo cache/ confused me a bit...
-
Yeah, the 7800GTX is the most powerful, hands down
like the others said, you cant even compare the 2 -
hehe worst part is that after reading the boards for the last 2 days I have no idea what i want to get.. Originally it was the asus V6J but now I am thinking about W3J, A8Jm and one more :/. The less I knew the less problems I had
.

The 7800GTXis a high end card, but it takes too much battery to really be mobile. The 7400 is not nearly as powerful, but will play newer games in med. settings and doesn't take nearly as much battery.

i dont realy care too much about battery as I dont drag it back and forth too often and if i do its usually by car. Ill prolly aim for one of these:
256 mbs
ATI Radeon X800
Nvidia Go6800
Nvidia Go7800
ATI Radeon X1800
Nvidia Go6800 Ultra
ATI Radeon X800XT
Nvidia Go7800GTX
ATI Radeon X1800XT -
If a notebook has a 7800GTX, its more than likely considered a Desltop replacement. if you will be gaming, and dont plan on carrying the notebook with you everywhere, i would go with the 7800GTX, as you said battery wont be important as well

Look at my list for the order of best performance. As for the rest of the system thats a case by case basis.
-
The thing with high end hardware is that it gets really hot. if you do get a desktop replacemant make sure to get a cooling pad too.
-
if you plan on gaming (maxed settings on everything) get a 7800..if you dont need everything maxed, you may be able to get by with a 7400...if you want your notebook to last for a lot longer..then get a 7800..it will be able to play everything for quite awhile.

ok thanks chaps - how about processor? which would be best to handle a 7800? or does it not matter much?
-
IMO any processor will be a bottleneck for a 7800gtx...if you have the money, get the best you can..BUT the price/performance ratio drops at a certain point, where your paying premium dollar for 100mhz more..
