Greetings! I have been debating over a couple of laptops with different GPU set-ups, and I have a question.

One laptop I've been looking at is the Dell M1710 (with the 7900GTX), and also some of those new SLI laptops (x2 7800GTXs in SLI). Purely on a GPU standpoint, which set-up is the better of the two?

(I'm full of it...questions that is...)

    Thanks for any help!

From a purely graphics standpoint the 7800's in sli are better.

I believe the SLI is better for gaming by a moderate amount, however, the M1710 is a better computer all around.

The dell M1710 is just barely what I would consider a laptop. At almost 9lbs, its not light, but then again its still kind of portable. I think your talking about the monsterous laptops from voodoo and such when you talk about sli. These are not really laptops. These are more like mobile desktops, and not really in the same catagory (usually 13lbs+). As far as power, these sli notebooks usually have the upper hand.

ok well ill go ahead and web research it for you

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=49868

ok well here is the m1710

    http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=2670

    heres one on the 5950

check out the picture of the keyboard. I sure hope thats a midget typing

so lets try to compare some benchmark between them

well according to cross referenced 3dmark scores the sli notebook has higher scores.

as far as I know this is the fastest laptop computer on the market right this moment then. It has a slower cpu, and also someday you could upgrade the xps cpu as more cpus will come out for that socket.
it could have 2 7200 rpm hds in raid 0.

contrary to what some people are saying this really is a laptop in that it uses a mobile gpus and cpu. I dont know how hot it is.

The Clevo M590K is an unpractical computer in my opinion. 19", 14.5lbs, and 45min battery life? There's no point. That would barely save space. Plus, it costs around 3 grand to start, topping out near $3,500 or so.

The Dell XPS M1710 is much more practical - the Go7900GTX is one hell of a card, and actually runs pretty cool (relative to other cards I've used in notebooks). Plus, you've got a Core Duo and DDR2-667 RAM, not to mention the SATA hard drive interface. That's more than you get in most high-end Intel desktops. The Core Duo is much better than any of Intel's current offerings.

At 17", it is borderline laptop, but after using it for about a week, the portability factor is actually decent, and I didn't mind the weight. It is pretty light for a 17", and doesn't feel as heavy as it is on paper. It has battery life too, over 2 hours with near max. brightness. You could probably stretch that to 2.5.

yes a shuttle pc is both lighter ( what amazes me actually is that it weighs 15 pounds more than how big it is. whats in there?)

and more portable in a way because its square and you can carry it like a lunchbox.

it doesnt have a built in screen. For that you could buy a lcd external. And I assure you lcd externals look way better than the ones they put on a laptop.

my $180 17 inch fuji lcd screen looks better than the ones on these sagers or whatever. better than they put on their own laptops.

So while I do think this 19 inch is a little more portable due to cables and such if you do like it consider a shuttle or monarch stinger pc with sli as well, because the 45 minute battery is just enough time to boot up and go to hibernation mode.

don't go for the xps1730.Not yet anyway.Dell has reported they made the grave mistake of not getting a compatible driver out yet for the 8700m g84 sli cards .they have a driver for it, but you can't enable sli.i'm searching for one that will host the cards.the go 7950gtx works, but some games like oblivion ,one of my favorites, have glitches.if anybody has info on a driver that they know works with the 1730 and its graphics cards, please post it cause i'm dyin here!

For clarification, the M1710 comes with nVidia 7950 GTX 512MB cards :)
    I'd go with the Dell.
