Hi all, this is my first post here though I've been reading a lot of the threads lately. I'm in the market for a Dell laptop that could run modern games but not break the bank, and the 6400 seemed to be the one. I was a bit put off by the Radeon x1400 256 MB as while it was given good ratings, I wanted more horsepower but didn't want to shell out for the Inspiron 9400.

I decided to wait until today when Dell's lousy Canadian coupons expired to see if the new one were better. I went to Dell.ca and they had their different configuration specials for the 6400 as usual, but this time they had a 6400 model starting around the $1,100 CAD mark that came with 1 GB shared RAM, a 100 MB HDD, and the T2500 2 GHz Dual Core CPU as standard. Pretty **** good I thought, until I scrolled down and saw the video options.

The GeForce Go 7900 GS is now available on this model!!!

I know this wasn't an option in the past and thought I ought to break the news to everyone that's looking for the same thing I am. The 6400 has gotten a lot of great reviews and now with the graphics horsepower that it deserves, it should be one of the most kickass laptops on the market.

CAVEAT: I checked Dell.com for our American bretheren and for some reason the 7900 GS is NOT an option when customizing the E1505. The highest you can go is a 7300 GS which seems like a worse choice than the x1400 both on the performance scale and the price increase. Perhaps this is Dell's way of compensating the Canadian market for the horrible coupons and deals they've been giving us versus the Americans. ;)

Dell just fixed the site. It's only the 7300 with turbocache... guess it was just a typo :(

I really do believe that it is a typo to 7300 GS as the 7300 GS is an option for the base model of the 6400 at the same price. I couldn't even see how they would fit a 7900 GS into a 15.4 inch notebook anyways. Never hurts to try but I'm not a firm believer of this happening and I see it as a typo.

EDIT: I guess Garbuckle got to it before I did...

Get this. I added one to my shopping cart with the 7900 GS option, and when I clicked System Details it changed it to the 7300 without telling me.

    Not impressed.

It would probably be impossible to put a Go7900GS in there anyway. I edited the title of this thread with a *typo* so our users don't get that confused.

I saw the new video card posted this morning, and was planning to buy it this afternoon.....but it was a typo :(. My question in why is it a $150 upgrade for the 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™Go 7300 TurboCache? Is it better than the 256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory? (a $100 upgrade). To me it looks like you could spend $50 for poorer preformance?

    Thank You

According to Chaz's video card ratings, that's exactly the case. Seems the X1400 is still the best you can stuff into this notebook. I'm wondering just how "future-proof" the X1400 256 MB would be and am contemplating the 9400 just to get the 7900 GS. Don't really want to drop that much coin but if it means the difference of a couple of years worth of gaming (relative to performance with future releases) then I'll do it.

No sense dropping $1,500 on a laptop you can only run current games on for a year when an extra $500 will get you one that will run them for three. Or is my line of thinking flawed and I'm discounting the X1400 too much?

I've been looking at the 9400 aswell. To get the upgrades (CPU: 2.16GHz, HD: 80GB 7200rpm, RAM: 2GB, 85 WHr 9-cell Battrery, BlueTooth) its more expensive (compaired to the 6400). You can build almost the same computer, except the Video card, and 17" screen, and the 9400 is around $575 more. You/I need to figgure out if the Video Card and Screen is worth the diffrence in money. Im thinking not, becides i'm wanting a 15.4".

Also im thinking about leaving the RAM at 512, and ordering Mushkin PC2-5300 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-667 200PIN SODIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=18816&vpn=991505&manufacture=MUSHKIN because it faster ram (Maching the bus speed of 667, as apposed to the 533 RAM that comes from dell), and cheeper.

    Cheers!

Ehh, I don't think it's a typo, it's still there as an option
