Bummer. I Just checked Direct 2 Drive and no luck. I don't think steam has it either.

I guess you can always order it over the net or from a store but...

As for a digital copy/running around without CD's, I think this is one of those games were your out of luck.

    Didn't Steam have it?
Ok, checked and Steam didn't have it either. You can always grab the DVD copy and use no-dvd method.

I played Gears 2 but never played Gears 1.

I was put off because I heard the PC version is full of bugs.

Oh well, I guess I could always try to get it for console.

The game doesn't need a disc to run, so if you buy a physical copy from an online retailer you'll only need the disc to install it.

    Here's the google product page

I own a physical copy fully patched and need the DVD to be in the drive to run it.

Are you speaking from personal experience mrsamsa? Or just what you have read. Perhaps it's a regional thing or something.

As with mostly all games, unless you mean an officially sanctioned one (which is what the initial post seemed to suggest).

There is one game I got recently that works officially without a DVD in the drive (The Witcher original - + enhanced edition patch).

I have found that some titles worked without the CD in the drive until after more recent patches. I find this very annoying, they could at least require you to have the CD after the patch for the very first run and then after that not require it anymore or something.

I have about 50 different games installed in my gaming laptop and there is no way I will ever travel with 50 CD cases so I always find ways to play without a CD. I have enough accessories and luggage to carry without adding extra.

Having said that, it was nice to see that my most recent purchase does not require the CD after I installed it but that was because they used steam.

it's to avoid friends 'sharing' games and playing at same time. doesn't really affect most consumers since they usually play 1-3 games at a time.
