I just got GOW, installed it which seemed to take forever, the game loads up, goes to the menu, but after running a minute or two, the game shuts down and I get the 'Gears of War has stopped working' error. Anyone know how to fix this? Please someone help, if you dont know how to fix this issue definitively then please do not bother to post.

All I want is a solution to fix this problem from someone who knows so I can play this damn game already!!! please help.

If you connect to windows live the patches should download once you log in. If you don't there should be a website in the instructions manual where to get the patches. Gears of war is a very bad port and has tons of bugs! All you have to do though is find fixs for the bugs. Then it runs great! If you have sutter problems feel free to PM me as I have a way to fix it =). Or you can post it on this thread and I can tell you how to fix it.

Thanks to everyone who replied. But all I can say is WOW!, this has been the worst experience I've had with trying to play a game. It's been problem after problem after problem with this damn game.

First the incredibly ridiculous long installation, then the crash error after 2 to 3 minutes of launching, and now I cant even "redeem" the so called "free" month of Live for windows with that bogus promotional code.   It says it can't redeem this code. Therefore I cannot get the patches.

This has been a VERY frustrating experience. How long has this crap been going on? And what has Epic done about all this ridiculous crap???

I have tried just about everything to no avail. I tried launching it from the GOW folder startup.exe through admin but all I get is another erorr message, telling me to "please insert the correct DVD-ROM,click, and restart the application". Even though its already in!

 I'm so mad and frustrated!!

Yep gears of war was a pain to install. I would say to uninstall and reinstall. Do you not have a xbox live account? IF you do you can use that. But you become a silver when you should be able to get the patches for it. DId you ever get a update sighn you you first stated up the game? You should have. Were you connected to the internet when you installed the game?

It didnt even make a launch icon on my desktop, and I have to put in th CD rom in order to start it up.

Also I was connected to the internet when I was installing.

Well when I launch the game, it starts like its about to work or "normally", it gets as far as the first opening scene in the game and then it blanks out back to the desktop with a "gears of war has stopped working" error.

I don't know if it will help but try putting it on lower settings. Have you uninstalled and reinstalled? If so you have to call support. The number is in your gow manual!

Makes sure the compatibility mode for the game exe is not set to Windows XP mode. For some, god knows what reason, Windows XP compatibility mode kills the game in the same way you discribed: game shuts down few seconds after the launch.

Also, just google for Gears of War 1.2 Patch, you do not have to go through windows live to install the patch.

Ok. After days of trial and error I was finally able to get this game running with no crash or error. The solution after literally trying most everything? Installing the games for windows LIVE junk before installing the actual game. It was plain and simple.

BUT, I soon there after noticed yet another fault in this game, I realized that you cannot save anything on this game with out logging on to their highly annoying windows LIVE crap. So I try to sign in and I'm hit with yes, you already know yet ANOTHER damn obstacle, it seems that I "have" to install their update or I will be signed out if I do otherwise, thus making it impossible for me to play this game. I hit update and wait a few minutes and then quick enough I'm right back to where it all started out with the infamous "Gears of War has stopped working" crap AGAIN!!.

It seems like this patch update just reversed the problem. Sigh.......I can't believe this game has given me so much problems in so little time. So here I am unable to actually play this game, with enjoyment and nowhere to turn (Epic support and forums are absoulutley AWFUL)

Why is the update causing me the same problems as previous? I ran the game fine, (though I was unable to save) prior to that dumb update and now Im here about to reinstall it all over again. I can't play this game because I cant save it with out first logging on and making that stupid update/patch which only gave me the error again. Rite now if I try to run the game I get the Windows C++Visual runttime error and the "'GOW has stopped working".

You should be able to save locally by installing a Hamachi fix, but I believe that you would lose XLive or whatever it is.

Oh, how this story never ends. Even though this game is fun, it is not worth all this hastle, so i would recommend UT3; Really good graphics, and fun. One thing to note. The game key and the Live account key are different things, but the amount of characters to enter is the same. If you do get the game to work, and you are logging in through Xbox Live where it asks you for the product key, make sure to enter the Game Key.

Gears of war for Windows is a terrible buggy PC port, so much so that I considered it to be an unfinished project. I bought it after Gears was my favourite game ever on the 360. I uninstalled it about two months ago, and gave up after following countless threads involving modifying CFG files to fix stuttering. Browsing around during the last couple of weeks however, and there does seem to be a fix that works for most people, although I've lost interest, and I now use my Gears for Windows DVD as a beermat. When I bought this junk, Epic games went from no.1 to the worst developer ever in my opinion in the space of about a week. The worst thing is that they released the game in such a state, and they still don't appear to have an official patch to fix the problems. People who have fixed it have done so by hearsay on modifying CFG files. Unacceptable.

It's not going to stop me from buying gears2 though, although I'll stick with the much safer bet of the 360 this time.
