I'm looking semi-seriously for a graphics card for my desktop. I don't do any heavy gaming; all I really want is to
A) Run Portal well at 1440x900
and
B) Run Compiz under Linux well
Since I use Linux, the (improving, but still) horrible ATI proprietary driver means that I'm looking only for an Nvidia card.
Since I don't plan to switch to Vista from my XP dual boot, DirectX 10 compatibility is of no concern to me. And since, from what I've heard, the Nvidia Linux driver isn't that good for the 8 series yet, I'm looking mainly for a 7 series card.
I'm currently looking at this:

It's an EVGA 7600 GT at 560MHz, with 256MB GDDR3 memory on a 128-bit interface. It's $65 (after a rebate). This seems like a good deal, but I don't know much about the state of the market.
As far as brands go, how does EVGA rank?
Is this worth it?

From what I've read EVGA is quite a respected brand.

A 7900GS/GTX/GTO would do well at that resolution. Too bad I already sold mine a month ago. :/
-
I would take that, $65 is really cheap.

I'd consider that a good deal. The 7600 GT performs just about as well as a 7900GS, in my opinion.
It'll run Portal well, it'll probably even max it out at that resolution.
I don't know about Linux support for that card, as I use an old Geforce 2 MX for my linux box.
I'd assume 7 series support would be stronger than 8 series support though. -
Please move this to desktop hardware.
-
Ah, I'm sorry for not reading the forum description closely enough.
I'd really appreciate a move to Desktop Hardware, as well. -
EVGA is one of the best nvidia brands out right now. They have a great warranty and their products are well respected. The 7600gt is a very good card, especially at a decent price. If you didn't know, it is the best nvidia card you can get for the AGP interface. Also, you almost definitely will not have a problem with power requirements with that card. Sounds like a plan.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127295 - 8500gt with ddr3 vram that's 50$ after rebate. Good basic card with some potential in older games. It's my choice for 50$ and under card after rebate.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127306 - 8600gt with 256mb ddr3 vram, and a very powerful cooling unit. 80$ after rebate. It will definitely perform better for gaming and graphics intensive programs though and can be used for gaming in the future should you choose to do so.
well those are my suggestions. I know you prefered a 7-series but an 8 would be a little more future proof just in case you make a new system. I could not find a better 7 series card though. -
take it, not bad of a price

65$ huh?
That seems good to me.
