Actually i am curious as well. I currently have 7300GT in my desktop and it performs quite well for Oblivion, Rainbow Six Vegas and STALKER (Low Resolutions). Mind you the 7300GT is a 128-bit bus (8400GS is 64bit) and is based on the 7600 technology with just some disabled shader/vertex pipelines. Today thou its perfromance is borderline for playing the newest games at high details.

I did some tests since i am considering getting a 8400GS laptop. But i think i came to the conclusion that the 8400GS will not reach 7300GT performance. Something i was dissapointed with since the 7300GT performance would have been what i consider ideal for a DX10 mobile thin and light computer.

Also Mobile versions are not the same as their desktop counterparts. A 7400go may not be faster than a 7300 desktop.

8400GS doesn't seem like a very good card... a much better buy is the 8600m 256 meg.

The 8400M-GS has approximately the same amount of shader power as the desktop 7300GT, however it has significantly less memory bandwith. Overclocking the VRAM can to some extent make up for this.

I think that means shader intensive games should be ok as long as you run at low resolutions and texture settings?

Having said that, the 8400GS is ROUGHLY as powerful as the desktop 7300 GT.

Which can play games like Bf2, bf2142, FEAR, RTS's and so on on Medium-high quite easily..... DONT EXPECT IT TO RUN CRYSIS or any other demanding 07/08 game.

Which 8600m are you refering to the GS or the GT? Also i think the link i provided to the 05/06 marks shows the 8600m GT is faster than the 8700m GT??

    Correct.

Of the 8600M-GT? The equivalent would be the 8600GT.

    If it does, it's wrong.

I don't think that's what he means when he asks for the equivalent. I think he's asking performance wise, and if that's the case, the desktop 8600 will smoke the mobile version.

Ahh, well, there's no real performance equivalent between desktop and mobile cards, it really doesn't work that way. The desktop 8600GT will be the closest equivalent, and should have a fairly constant lead on the 8600M-GT in pretty much all situations.

Also seems the mobile gpu drivers are not as optimized as the desktop ones...
Nvidia do not release official drivers for mobile, and modified ones are not as optimized, sometimes causing me problems with CPU overloading frequently when playing games, even with a C2D 7300 2.0GHz!!

oh, i think it will, once crysis or any other demanding game will come out, nvidia will have to release an update for the mobile version as well. imho

I think the 8600MGT would be closer to a 7600GT in terms of performance.

The 7300GT will definitely out perform the 8400GS, especially if its a ddr3 model which can be oc'd to reach 7600GT levels (in performance terms). It was the best budget card to hit the shelves in ages I think.

Planet I don't think thats a problem with the optimised drivers. Pretty much everyone here uses optimised drivers! I do, on a 1.66Ghz Core Duo, and I've never once experienced a CPU 'overload' on any game I play using various sets of drivers.

Strange, what could be the problem?

I have often seeing framerate drop drastically and stuttering whenever both cores of CPU hits 99-100% during gameplay, e.g in WIC, Broken-sword...

And that's the desktop card, not the mobile one. The question here was the mobile 8400GS vs the desktop 7300GT :)

Plus, the 8 series are strong in synthetic benchmarks, which can be misleading in relation to gaming performance.
