Hi.
I'm buying a new laptop and I'm choosing between a 8400M GS and a 8600M GT. Is there a big difference between these cards? I'm not going to play all of these new graphics demanding games like Crysis, Bioshock etc... I just want something that works fine with games such as The Sims and maybe some new games ( I don't need to play at the highest settings tho )... So will a 8400M GS be enough for this or should I go for the 8600M GT which is alot more expensive?
Thanks in advance

Yes, there is major difference between the two cards. Even though you won't be playing graphic intesive games, go with GT, its worth the extra $$$.

Yes, there is a major difference in those cards. It is well worth the extra money if possible. The Sims 2 is very graphics demanding. If you are just playing the Sims 1, well then an 8400M will be fine. But, might as well get the better card for the future when you might want to play a high demanding game... All in all.....
Sims 1- 8400M
Sims 2-8600M ------

i was in your same position a couple months ago and i went with the 8400. At first i wished i'd gotten the 8600 because i wanted to play all the new games coming out. Now i'm glad i saved the $100 because i plan on building a desktop next year and i'm sure the 8600 will struggle with game by then.

It'd help to know what new games you're thinking of getting, but based on what you've said so far, the 8400M should be enough. -
The 8400m is crippled with 64bit memory. Get the 8600m GT its FAR SUPERIOR.

Dont have much knowledge about the Graphics card.

The sims 2 will play on IGPs but it struggles. The 8400M GS should do pretty well with the sims 2 but if you want to play anything much more demandinglike the latest games I really would go for the 8600M GT, the 8400M GS just won't cut it on the newer stuff and a lot of the newer games look far superior on higher settings. It depends on the price premium of course but if you do want to try some newer games I'd get the 8600M GT.

Well in my opinion, it's your choice because to choose 8600GT you'll have to go with 15inch+ which compromises portability a bit(I really don't want to carry all that weight and size around campus and workplace). I have Sony SZ680 and it can run HL2 EP2 1280*800 All high settings and get 30~40fps. I play WOW, TF2, CSS, and oblivion too. If you are gonna play crysis and bioshack all that stuff you'll need better than 8600GT anyway. In my opinion even 7950GTX SLi is crap for extreme gaming. If you are gonna play some real games go build a desktop with something better than 8800GT SLi.

GeForce 8400m is NOT for gaming. This card is the lower-end of dedicated GPUs designed to provide you with a decent Windows Vista Aero experience, thats about it. Although most games will run on a system with this GPU, they only will because the card is supported. By no means will it run games at good setting and native resolution. This card has been circumsized of all of the 8 series atributes and gaming capabilities. My roommate has this card in his HP and C&C3 crashes without starting, NFS:Carbon is at LOWER RES LOWEST SETTINGS and its not even demanding. He playes Worms 2:Armageddon on it lol. For a hundred dollar difference you get a completely different GPU. 8600m GT can run anything thats out now and will be out soon at very decent settings and a good resolution. Work overtime or something and get the extra 100. You will never regret it

I think Celeron is the cheaper less capable smaller brother of Pentium which requires less power and generates less heat. I havent seen a celeron anywhere for years now though he he. However they are still out and about...

8600m GT hands down. People who say they do "light" gaming it doesn't matter. If it doesn't run well or at all then what's the point? 8400m is good for games over 3 year old to play at decent resolutions or settings. Newer games will run fine on the 8600m GT and probably will for the next year and start to struggle next year with the newer titles, but will still run.
Geforce 8400M GS or 8600M GT
