I am not a pro in computers. I am about to go to university therefore decide to get a laptop. The newest Dell 1520 ones comes with 8600M GT (and cost about £700 which is about 1400$). My current desktop has a 8600 GT. I know the laptop one will have less performance but, by how much?
If the difference is huge then probably it is good news because I can concentrate on my studies a bit more![]()

not huge i think its not even significant

About 5-15% that's about all

The desktop card will always be faster. the ram speed is on top of this, and total it should be about 30% difference.
-
The difference will be something, since it's a DDR2 card. Look at those 3Dmark06 scores form my 2 computers
1. Desktop with Sempron 3100+, 8600GT, 1.5GB DDR400 and Vista 32bits: 3600 pts
2. C90S with DDR2 8600M GT (stock clock), E4500 and2GB DDR2 533 + Vista X64: 2990 pts (or 3300 with the memory OC at 500mhz)
In-game FPS are the same, except that the desktop is running at 1280x1024 and the laptop at 1680x1050 so if you will see a difference depends on the cpu in both computers. -

If you read the line after, I said the notebook has better gaming performances
And the OP did call for a desktop-laptop comparison. For the clocks, the notebook is clocked at 513mhz on the core (rivatuner reports that, even though supposed to be 475 but still...) while the desktop is 540 and GDDR3 memory is 700mhz on both -
Geforce 8600 GT (DDR3)vs Geforce 8600M GT (DDR2)
