    Hey guys, I haven't found this info on the web, so I'm asking it here.

    I was wondering if the Geforce 8600M GT has the nvidia TurboCache feature so it can get more than 256MB of video memory from the system RAM?

    (on a XPS M1530, with GDDR3 VRAM, for instance)

    Cheers!

    I don't think so. But It can only make use of so much, I don't think there is any way it can make full use of 512MB anyway so more slower would not help.

    I got an M1530 and when I was checking out options in the control panel, and I think I saw something like 256MB RAM, up to 512MB, but I can't quite remember. If the laptop wouldn't have died on me, I'd look for you.

    plus you are right and wrong yes it does cache 1 gb of ram when needed but only when you have 2 gb of ram on your system . turbo cache uses half of whatever ram you have stored. if you have 4gb then it will use 2gb.

    I have 2.5 gigs of ram, and turbocache still uses just 1 gig, it's 1.25 total with the 256 dedicated. (on my 8600gt vddr2)

    I have been looking for over an hour on this. Nvidia says nothing about "turbocache" beyond 7400, what does this mean? I don't know. Notebookcheck does not say it has "turbocache". NVidia says it is designed to work with Vista. Does that mean it uses sys mem to save power maybe? Does that make it turbocache? Not necessarily. Any of you guys running Vista? I have no reason to doubt any of you but more to this than meets the eye, would like to get definitive answer to the question.

    I think any card beyond 7400 has turbocache... so i guess it's just assumed.

    I'm a bit confused about the amount of video memory my dell 1720 has. On the web site I ordered it with 512 mb of memory, the invoice says that it has the 256mb version, the computer says I have the 512mb version, and GPU-Z says I have the 256mb version. is it 256 with 512 turbocache? or a full 512?

    Don't quote me on this, but I believe the 8600m GT are with 256 if they are gddr2 and 512 if they are gddr3. Don't know if that helps

    Guess I'm quoting you on this anyways, oh well.

    There are 256mb GDDR3 cards, and I've only heard of the 512mb cards coming in ddr2.

    isn't the turbocache feature just driver dependent? if so, all you need is check the driver itself :D

    aaah necromas and you're right - 8600GT is in 256MB DDR3 flavour or in 256MB DDR2 or in 512MB DDR2. and i think i've seen once in a shop advert a version with only 128MB DDR3 but i wouldn't stake my life on that being real...

    128MB= GDDR3
    256MB= DDR2 of GDDR3 (DDR2 On inspiron + Asus F8SV)
    512MB= DDR2

    EVERY DX10 cars have turbocache/hypermemory under Vista. It IS a new mandatory feature of DX10.

    If you have 2GB of system RAM, turbocache will be able to use up to 768MB if your system memory

    i just wonder whether these added MBs would really make the game faster as at the same time you're decreasing the total ram used by all the processes. i'd prefer to have more ram total than just in the turbocache.

    turbocache only uses system RAM thats not being used by any other application. So it won't make anything slower.
