Does anyone know any real performance difference or which is superior?
When I followed notebook check, it claimed 280M to be faster but I think SLI should have outperforned 280M Single as SLI has 2 GPUS(96X2) compared to 1(128) and memory are also same that is 1 GB.

They might be on par or the GTX280M might win. 2 GPUs doesn't really add up to 2x performance. Also, there's the thing with softwares that doesn't fully utilize SLI or simply has bad support that needs newer drivers to increase performance.

I'd say a single GTX280M is the way to go since there won't be problems due to lack of SLI support

@Reizo...Yes you are right but only in terms of software but according to hardware (88m SLI) is superior. Also, what about the performance differences in games like Crysis, COD which really utilizes SLI. I can see a big performance difference with SLI on and off.

SLI 8800m gtx will kick the butt of the 280m, especially at high resolution. But sli is pointless if you have a weak cpu.

Uhhh 8800m GTX SLI won't knock off a GTX 280m.

In reality, you're looking at a very similar performance... maybe 5 FPS difference maximum in favor of the 280m, but I would say they will perform about the same.

2x512mb is not the same as having 1x1gb. SLI doesnt add them together.

    5 FPS with what? Meaningless.

For well optimized games that fully support SLI cards, 8800GTX SLI will totally wipe out GTX 280M, assuming other hardwares for both setup are similar, especially at high resolutions. Well, for games can't utilize dual cards, 280M will win of course. So the comparison is very situational, can't simply say 280M>8800GTX SLI or 8800GTX>280M.

No the 8800m GTX SLI is more powerful. Try a Crysis benchmark at 1920x1200 and compare. Game that utilize SLI well the 8800m GTX SLI will run faster than the GTX 280m.

The 8800m's in Sli will outperform a Gtx 280m. If you look at benchmark's and game performance you will clearly see it. 8800's are essentially the same as my card's and I doubt any one with a single 280m could beat my performance, even with Core i7.

Sli shows noticeable gain when using high resolutions, but the single 280M can be faster at lower resolutions. Sli support obviously plays a big role. The higher clockspeed and shader count could only account for a ~25% boost, at best, when comparing the 280M to a single 8800M GTX.

So, in summary if there is a SLI advantage taking game like crysis, then 88m SLI will outperform SLI.

I don't know why, but for me it seems ppl are still stuck in the 2004 and before where the SLi support was poor... Ppl keep saying "lack of SLI support..."

I, as a SLI user, can say without any doubts that i haven't found any game from 07 till now that doesn't show me an increase of at least 40% with SLI enabled vs Disabled... And i'm saying AT LEAST, which is not the most common result... My fps almost always get doubled (by doubled i mean 30 to 50... 15 to 25... Not EXACT but very close) which in any case is a great performance boost...

So, yes, 8800 GTX SLI will be better than 280M single in any game... New games support SLI and older games which may have problems with SLI, well, are OLD, so they shouldn't have problems running with "only 1 8800M GTX"...

Games i have played in my current sli rig and show a big boost: Bioshock, Assasin's Creed, Crysis, NFS Prostreet-Undercover-Shift, UT3, COD4-5, The Orange Box, Tomb Raider Underworld, FIFA 08-09, TimeShift, Street Fighter IV, Batman Arkham Asylum, Prototype (what a sux game), Bionic Commando, MLB 2K9, Gears of War, GRID, DIRT, Black & White 2, The Sims 2, Spore, and probably around 5 more which i don't remember...

Yeah the old days without SLI support is over. Now at least 95% of the games have SLI support. Or you can make a SLI profile for them in Nhancer.

So, 88m SLI will kill 280m. Nice to hear that.
