Actually, the upgrade to the 8700GT costs an extra $500 ($2099). and the jump to the 8800GTX costs an extra $1200 from base ($2799). But along with those, u get a better CPU and in the highest model , a glowing keyboard. Here's the site so you can check it out.

I am thinking of getting the M1330, which only comes with the 8400M GS. I know this isn't considered particularly good for gaming, but I want something really light to take around school with me. I do want to be able to game on it though (LOTRo, Civ 4) and perhaps plug it into a larger monitor. Do you think it would be worth waiting a month for the 9xxx equivalent? Assuming it would be out? Or is anything that is going to fit into such a small computer going to be pretty crummy for gaming?
-
The 9500 doesn't support DX10.1
EDIT: Since the 9600GT is in the lastest drivers, I look a bit on the internet and found a review (in chinese), just google 9600GT on google. It doesn't support DX10.1 and has same specs as the 8800M GTS. It scores 11K in 3dMark06 -

I don't think a month will give you time for the equivalent, so if you're pressed for time buy one now. But I wouldn't recommend the M1330. If you have money to spare, go for a sony SZ, or an asus of sort. I recommend you go to the what notebook should I buy section (look on one of stickies for question format, and one the NBR members will help you with your problem). Generally, they 14 inch or less are aimed towards portability with limited gaming capabilities so don't expect much. You should be able to play your mentioned games fine, but stuff like Call of Duty 4, World in Conflict, Crysis, you might have to play low/med settings.
Hope that helped
Any idea on when the 9600GT is coming out? and any guesses who will adopt to using it? To my knowledge, no one has announced they will be using it yet. I might opt for a laptop with the 9600GT instead of one with 8800GTS or GTX. I'm planning on purchasing in August, so it might be out then with a price comparable to the 8800GTS or GTX -
The 9600 GT (desktop) will be available from the 21st of Feburary according to Nvidia, but there's nothing being said at all about a 9600M GT. As other people have said, the 8800M was released not too long ago, and currently Nvidia has no competitors in the mid-high range mobile GPUs.
It's a shame, because my school term starts soon and I'm going to need to buy myself a notebook, so I'll probably be stuck with a 8600M GT instead. On top of that, I'm going to miss out on Perylins (I know I spelt it wrong) on that new platform. -
Dont worry too much about losing performance. The 8600m GT is a very capable card that you will be happy with for a while. Its also very OC'able
If you always wait for the latest technology to come, you may as well hybernate - the wait will never end as long as market competition is alive. -

This thread makes really happy that I'm getting a 8600M GT.
Anyone know when Assasin's Creed For Pc? -

I believe in March, check site's like gamespot. they should have release dates on their sites. -
silentnite2608 Notebook Evangelist
So we can pretty much say that any 9 series that is coming out soon. Is going to be gear towards Mid-low end system. Has no info about Dx10.1.
And there is no die srinkize.
And that the current 9500M GS is equal to 8600M GT
Anyone else smell sticky? -
Please correct me if i'm wrong, but i think i remember that the high end mobile 7 series came out in late 07~. And the geforce 8600m came out in may. Thats about a 5-7 month spread. If this holds true to the 9 series, we should be seeing the 9 series in august or when montevia* (spelling, God dam you Intel, y the weird names that no one can spell!) But it is my belief that nvidia is trying to shorten the time span between desktop versions and notebook versions. The 8 series is fast approaching its first birthday and i believe nvidia is in the late stages of another pregnancy. Thats my parable for the day.
-
And one more thing, I think that nvidia screwed themselfs for releasing a high end mobile 8 series card more than a year after the high end desktop version was released.
-
BS
$1200 includes the GPU upgrade, CPU, HDD, RAM and keyboard glow
and all that comes around to $500 for the GPU
When the base model is coming out I am going to buy it with the GPU upgrade + maybe CPU upgrade and thats about it, HDD and RAM I am going to be buying on Newegg since its way cheaper -
i have a 8800m gtx and it will probably be the top videocard for laptop for at least 6-8month... im not scared of the 9xxxm series... if you want a computer buy it now... because every2-3month theres something new anyway... i didnt wait for penryn...
-
ilikeicehockey Notebook Evangelist
yea, but alienware might be cheap. If you look on the site, you can only get the best GPU if you buy the most expensive one. However, with the cheaper model or base you might be able to have full customizable options, but as of right now, there's now way of getting the 8800GTX unless you get the most expensive model. -
Thats why I said once its out ^^
I sure hope it will have everything I need... when is the skullcap option available + colors?
I just want base model + 8800m gtx + stronger cpu + smartbay battery + some small options
RAM and HDD off newegg. -
ilikeicehockey Notebook Evangelist
how much cheaper is it if you get it off newegg. I plan on buying a lappy in august so not sure what to get yet just cause I have a ton of time. Right now its down to this
1. An ultraportable laptop (for class notes and looking cool in the room, needs a good bat. life) and a gaming laptop (would like one that could play empire:total war at max. or close to it)
2. An ultraportable laptop and a gaming desktop (either a laptop or desktop for gaming, problem is I mihgt want to game in the train or something like that)
3. a laptop that can take notes and also game (possibly the alienware one or an asus)
In total, Im gonna have about 2800$ CAD and also the money I get from selling my G1S. Not to worry though, I ahave a lot of time until I make my decision -
MAC AIR + M15X
LMAO
Im not too sure... many more ultra portables are coming out this year...
2800CAD... ? please convert lol -
its the same as USD pretty much....holy craaaap..
-
ilikeicehockey Notebook Evangelist
yea, its about the same, a bit less now so maybe 2700. And Im pretty sure Im not goin for the air too big and looks like i could break it by touching it. And it has nothing, no optical drive, 1 usb, no removable batt. lol. what was the holy crap for narsnail... my amount im willoing to spend for the laptops?
-
I'd said M15X could be both your talking about!
I mean... depends how much of a whimp you are... as in how much weight you can handle
The m15x is only about 7-8 pounds I hear...
Its pretty darn powerful (trust me)
And later on if you really want an ultraportable buy the newest Eee PC by asus
And if not... just buy a desktop with dual 8800gt or "later on 9800"
But I think your more laptop guy -
Did anybody notive that ASUS must just have taken out the SPECS for their notebooks that would support the 9xxx series? i had a look at it like 40 mins ago and could see ALL the SPECS and they were pretty impressive from what they offered (newest processors, hd/blu ray drive 9xxx series 400gbhdd and so on) and now all the field are blank expect that they say they ship it with XP (before it w3as with vista and xp not even possible)
Coincidence to that everybody just noticed that there is a new series comming out and now rethinking if they want to buy their notebook/computer right now or wait
or not
?
(or is it just me who cannot see them anymore?) -
ilikeicehockey Notebook Evangelist
yeah, i'll decide then. The thing is I want a slick ultraportable, one that looks cool. Such as the asus U1F, but that has a heft price tag, maybe a U3 is more affordable. As for the Alienware, it is a sick ass laptop but might be on the heavy side, as I am a whimp so I want a light one. I also want to maybe have it to be able to actually sit on my lap and have a decent battery life. And yeah, im more of a laptop guy so yeah... Maybe the Eee will do it. -
ilikeicehockey Notebook Evangelist
Uh, i think u just mis-read it, look here:
http://asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=24&l3=297&l4=0&model=2048&modelmenu=2
And yeah, it should be good, but as said in this thread, the 9xxx series that are coming out soon are not that good. The 9500GS is the exact same as the 8600GT so its really not that good, just a different name but same parts. And yes, if you looked before, we were having discussions on buying laptops now or later. -
just suprised me our local m15x 8000m gtx fanboi/obsessor didnt know they were the same..
-
How does the 9300m and 9500m rate against the old 8xxx series?
Are they good enough to be able to play COD4 and Crysis lag free on default settings?
And are there any benchmarks for these graphics accelerators?
Any help would do. -
Are they even available for benchmarking?
-
They´re not even officially announced by Nvidia.
-
They have been released though. I saw an Asus m51s with the 9500GS.
-
They won't be as fast as the 8400 and the 8600. In the Nvidia line up the second number lets you know about the speed of a card.
One would think that an Nvidia 8400 would kick the snot out of a 7600 but it doesn't.
The only advantage the 9300 and 9500 will have over the 8 series is the supposed DX10.1 compatibility and the goodies of a Geforce 9 GPU but not higher speeds.
The higher speed models (9600-9800) will come out eventually but we're looking at least at a 6 months time frame. -

There already been done thou NBR. -
There are two models of the M51sn which are available in Australia right now. The only difference is the processor and the graphics. The M51sn AP003G ($1800AUD) has a T9300 (2.5ghz) and a Nvidia 8600GT while the M51sn AP0004G ($2300AUD) has a T9500 (2.6ghz) and a Nvidia 9500m.
-
Ah, cool. Would love to get that or a ATI mobiligty HD 3650 version, depends on which GPU is the fastest.
Btw, AUD is worth what in EUR or USD?
-
Is the nvidia 9500m GS 512mb have GDDR2 or GDDR3 memory?
-
Is this even officially released yet? 9 series for desktops isn't even widely available yet (if at all).
-
Yea. It is available in Australia in the next week in Asus laptops
-
For the last time, the 9500M GS is the same chip as the 8600M GT, and Nvidia's 9 series doesn't support DX10.1.
-
In my country (italy) there is a an Asus laptop with that gpu ...
But i can't see that on asus website
Asus Pro 57n

There you.
512Mb will not help you since it has the same bandwidth of a 8600M GT
which is 128bit so it it only really go up to 256Mb of real usage.
DDR 2 vs DDR 3
DDR2 is less cost to make so it will be cheap
But it takes more voltage means less battery life.
Also not as high bandwidth or speed.
DDR 3
Does cost
les voltage
High bandwidth or speed
In over there is not to much performance differce if it is the same core.
8600 M GT DDR2
8600M GT DDR3 -

Bump good thread.
9300GS = 8400m GT DDR2
9500GS = 8600m GT DDR2
Also can be bought in austrila. -
So will the 9500 essentially be in 15.4" laptops, and 9300 in 14" and less? Or will the die shrink make the 9500 available in 14" too?
-
there already are 8600gt aka 9500m in 14 inchers
look asus -
Well yes, but I'm wondering if it will be adopted by most manufacturers in smaller notebooks due to the die shrink.
-
i was just browing the forum, but can't help to sign up and reply.
I just bought the The M51sn AP003G ($1799AUD) today in Sydney
Core 2 Duo T9300 (2.5ghz)
2gb memory
15.4" display - standard resolution
Nvidia Geforce 9500M GS 512mb
pretty sweet deal, comes free gifts - mouse, bag and a photo printer worth about 100AUD. -

Benchmark NOW!!!
-
apparently it gets over 3500 in 3dmark06... wtf? I thought it was just a slight improvement over the 8400m GS.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html -
oh crap i take back what i said. I just read an earlier post stating that it was the same chip as the 8600m GT.
-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Ken already has benchmarks up for the asus m51sn. Its basically on par with the 8600m gt ddr2.

Could someone (do/link me to) a direct comparison between HD 3650 and 9500M GS?
-
Well since they run at the same speed and have the same number of stream processors it's not really surprising.
-
DX10.1 is backward compatible with DX10
Geforce 9500M GS
