I'm looking for some opinions about how easy and comfortable it is to game on a notebook. I'm considering buying one for Christmas with medium-gaming in mind. I have very limited use with notebooks, and therefore my mouse control is terrible. I'm aware that I will drastically improve with time.
In general, how easily is gaming done on a notebook compared to a PC? I game a decent amount on PC, but I have a feeling games like FPS' may be bulky and difficult. I'm not referring to the specs of a notebook, but moreso the logistics of playing.
I'd love to hear opinions from gamers. Also, let me know if you prefer to use a bluetooth mouse and such as well.

I find playing some games really hard on a notebook because my fingers catch the trackpad and move the cursor, really not helpful on games like FEAR
I have a wired Logitech mouse, it's not great but it is cheap
I wish I could disable the trackpad or something but it seems to be impossible, although on most notebooks you can -
Gaming on a notebook isn't too bad. I'm kind of used to it now, and it doesn't bother me at all using my notebook to game, infact i quite enjoy it. A valid point that Calum did make, was about the fingers moving the touchpad. i have no such problem, as mine does have a button which disbles the touchpad. It really does help. I can't really imagine gaming properly with the touchpad enabled. Hope this helps.

I hate using a trackpad for gaming. It's not bad with strategy or turn based games, but I'd suggest a wired mouse for your notebook if you want to play any FPS's or RTS's. A mousepad-disable button/key is also nice. They're on most newer Compaq's, and I think they're on Acer's through a Fn key of some sort. Gaming on a laptop is different than on a desktop, but it can still be quite fun, and it's nice having the games be portable.

I have a nostromo n52 and a logitech mx700 hooked up to my laptop for gaming.. but I have to admit in past years my desktop keyboard had a touchpad built in and I learned to play FPS using one
It actually works just as well as a mouse, but you gotta stick with it just like you originally did with your first *insert controller for PC or console* system.
Then again, I also have been known to play fps with a trackball... I guess I dont really care since adapting isn't that hard if you dont focus on how much you wish it was another way, and just focus on getting better...
:::NOTE:::
I can write with either hand as well as the other.. that may have something to do with it =P -
i just got a notebook 2 weeks ago, and i find gaming just the same. I connected my wireless keyboard/mouse to the laptop and boom ready to go. I would never use the trackpad for any type of game, just too annoying.

ditto. Just remember to buy one with the touchpad on/off button. I game with a $10 wired optical notebook mouse (made by Microsoft) and it works great. If your notebook gets hot while gaming, you might feel some discomfort as you will rest your palm near the HD.

I have an external keyboard and Logitech G7. I prefer the feel of that over the notebook keyboard/touchpad if I have the option. I don't think I'd try FPS/RTS with the touchpad--but that's more because I have no touchpad skills. I've always gone with a mouse and like the additional distance from the screen that a typcial desktop setup affords me.
Gaming experience will only change logistically if you must use the touchpad, and maybe slightly with the notebook keyboard. -

Windows should have a touchpad disable funcion in the mouse section of the control panel.

Yes, there is one. It is much more convenient though to have a physical on/off switch.
