I recently had my 6990m died in my p150hm. I am planning to buy a new P150SM with a 880M.

Is it the right time to do that or wait for the next upgrade from Nvidia?

When does the new graphic cards usually arrive from Nvidia...I dont want to buy a 880M then next month a new model comes out!

There are signs nVidia is prepping new mobile parts and with AMD getting ready to release the M295X, it might force nVidia's hand to release a Maxwell card like 880MX now and then the big performer next year.

With that said, its all rumors. If you can wait, wait. If not, go for it. A single 880M will actually stay cool so it won't suffer the wrath of the throttle those of us with SLI machines are getting. At least not the temperature throttle. The 880M vbios aggressively throttles stock so you won't see boost if you're over 80C.

I would wait.. The 880M is a massive disappointment from NVIDIA and with the AMD R9 295MX and the Maxwell NVIDIA cards coming out soon (AMD in August), I would wait a while...

Then you can wait for the next upgrade if you feel that it's the right thing to do. I would wait for the next upgrade from Nvidia if I were you.

Might fix it for 6 months. Or an hour. My experience was the latter. :p

880m is still a pretty powerful card and a big jump in performance compared to 6990m. If you can't wait, you should definitely go for it (780m or 880m). I am really happy with my 780m and I am patiently waiting for the maxwell 20nm GPUs to come out but it seems they will take a while :)

See I have bought the 6990m at Dec. 2011 and by 2 months the 7970m was introduced. Now if the new Nvidia graphics card comes out in a matter of two months then the wait would be OK. However, if it comes by next year for example, then I would buy the 880m.

This is why I need to have a hint if to wait or go for a new p150sm.

I am in the same situation as you. I am looking to buy a laptop for a few months now, and I start to be quite hasty. However I think I had rather wait a little more for the M295X since I fear that the new Nvidia cards will come too late..

Right now no don't buy Kepler. New cards are just around the corner literally!

880M is fast but it is also tech that is over 2 years old (desktop 680). Soon a midrange card will be at the same level and you will have wasted a lot of money.

I am keeping my 7970M at stock clocks for now and at undervolt (2.5 years old nearly) cause I want it to last at least another 6 months. Try to eek out more time if you can!

After seeing what ATI cards perform I will never buy them again! I wish you good luck in your 7970m.

However, if the next upgrade is in 2015, then I still have 6 months without a laptop to game on! All I hear are rumors which does not have any backup to support my wait.....but I dont want to feel cheated by buying a 880m then the next month a new one comes out.

It performs gr8 thank you very much. Besides ati is long gone. The reliability issues is due to amd having bought them up! The last ati release was mobility 5870m

I wasn't in a position to wait when I got mine. I have a Sager 8278 with a single GPU. I love it. It was very similar to my old AMD machine with how many different settings had to be set correctly for maximum performance. An Sli setup was far above my price range. Mine appears to work as advertised. I am very happy with the purchase.

Actually AMD bought ATi way back in '06. They just officially retired the ATi brand name after the Radeon HD 5000 Series.
