What will have better performance in the long run since they will probably be similar priced and i can find plenty of coupons to use to knock it down...

The 8600 would have better performance in the end especially since it is DX10 capable.

It all depends. The golden rule is, "Do I absolutely need the laptop now?"

If yes, get the laptop with the Go 7700. If no, then wait a month. Since Santa Rosa was just released a few weeks ago, manufacturers need time to present their Santa Rosa lineups (remember for Core 2 Duo, when it was released in July/August of last year, many manufacturers released their laptops in September and October?).

If you can wait until the end of May, many more options will present themselves. There's the Asus A8Js refresh with the 8600M GT, there's the Compal IFL90 15.4" 8600M GT that's coming out in June, there's possibly a Dell XPS refresh and possibly a new XPS M1410, and plenty of more laptops coming out that'll have DX10 cards and Santa Rosa.

Prices will drop, too, if you wait until next month.

So will the asus a8js also have a 8600gt card because then i have to decide between large or small even though they get the same battery life :D

Are there really any options for better performance in this 1500USD or so price range?

Just because the 8600 cards are DX10 doesn't mean they will perform better.

About 2000 in 3DMark 06. Isn't that about the same as an X1600 or 7600?

Edit: Oh wait, the 8600 GT scored 3668!

Wait for the 8600. If you're looking for something futureproof, get the 8600. If you really can't wait, get the 7700 now. But don't feel bad if you see other people running games like Crysis and using DX10 to the fullest. And besides, the 8600 might have newer features like Shader Model 4.0 that will always make games that use it look nicer.

And they'll most likely be in the price range of the laptops with the Geforce Go 7700 right now when those laptops with the 8600 come out.

The A8sc (I think that is what it is called :p) will only have the 8400. :( The F8 which will be an upgrade of the A8 series will most likely have the 8600. That won't be released until sometime in August.

I'm just going to piggyback on this topic, but when are the new HP laptops getting the nVidia GPUs anyways? I've seen places saying late May, some saying June, and some not even giving any information on it. I want to get the new dv2500 with the 8400 myself -- is that coming out the same as the other HPs?

Yep, it's the Santa Rosa refresh to the F3 series. Most people in the Asus forums were very disappointed in Asus' choice in the graphics card, considering the previous generation of F3 carried the Radeon X1700, almost matching graphics power of the A8Js or V1Jp for several hundred dollars less.

Now with the V1Jp and A8Js apparently headed off to be updated with the 8600M GT, the F3 is being left behind with the 8600M GS.

It also has an odd res of 1366x768...

So how much more approx. will the new santa rosa a8j cost with 8600gt...

Im not sure how much ill even use dx10 so im also debating between going for a e1705 or something instead

    Any other suggestions for notebooks

The Asus C90S is well worth looking at for a 15.4" gaming notebook for around $1,500. It is quite large and heavy for its size so be warned, and it won't get that great of battery life. However, it has the Nvidia 8600M-GT and more powerful desktop Core 2 Duo processors.

What is asus' history with laptop video cards? With Dell, as long as the laptop model number didn't change, you could always buy the newest available graphics card for the model laptop you have and install it.

Does asus have the ability to swap video cards in this way? Since so many people were wondering which asus to purchase or wait for based on the video card, is there a chance to upgrade previous model's video cards to the newest?
