for all those who dont know:
WXGA+ = 1680x1050
WUXGA = 1920x1200
basically im ordering a Sager NP5793 17" laptop that either comes in these two screens and i dont know which screen to pick.
considering that im using a 9800m GTS gpu for gaming, i dont knoe whether i can handle newer games (Crysis, CoD:WaW, left4dead) at a 1920x1200 resolution screen with most settings on high. But heres the catch, the matte screen only comes in WUXGA(1920x1200) and the glossy screen only comes in WXGA+(1680x1050). So as your personal preference, which screen would best fit this laptop at its current GPU and which type of screen is better for mainly gaming in general, glossy or matte?
p.s. please note that I'm not trying to start a flame war between matte and glossy, i just want to know which screen would best fit my laptop uses.
sorri title is suppose to say
Glossy WXGA+ vs. Matte WUXGA on 9800m GT

well you wouldn't be able to run at WUXGA in most new games but u can always scale down the resolution at a loss of some picture quality. If u plan on watching alot of movies go for the higher res but if you are primarily a gamer go for the WXGA+.

1680*1050 is wsxga+ not wxga+.
IMO the higher the better. go for wuxga -
thnx for the quick reply adam. So basically it wouldnt matter what native resolution your monitor has unless you have a very good gpu to back it up?
Is the quality worst if i ran a game not at its native resolution? -
I confused between what you have on your post and your title.
I would go with the WSXGA+ so it wont hurt my eyes and fps in game. Maybe games in the future will be much more demanded.
If you are working under intense light, go with matte, otherwise, glossy is better for entertainment use. -
thnx for the reply tianxia, but i dont knoe if a 9800m GTS can handle newer games at a WUXGA resolution. i dont knoe if this is true, but isnt playing a game not at its native resolution a bad thing?

sorri for the misinformation haquocdung, i meant to say Glossy WXGA+ vs. Matte WUXGA on 9800m GT. thnx for the reply!

I would choose WXGA+ = 1680x1050. High enough for 17" and perfect for playing everything @native res. with all details max. in most games.
Plus I choose glossy over matte, but that's just a matter of taste. I really dig the glossy screen on my M1530! -
For this card, I`d take WSXGA, or even WXGA+ to run games natively

I've been out of the notebook shopping and gaming for a long time.
As far as single GPU notebooks go, how well do they do at:
WXGA+ (1440x
WSXGA+ (1680x
WUXGA+ (1920x
I think that's right... I really want to get a DTR and I want to be able to play games (3 that come to mind: World of Warcraft (WoTLK), Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3, and in the far future Diablo 3)
Will a single card be able to run those types of games (not DX10 intensive games) at WUXGA+ with good framerates (assuming no FSAA w/ details /shaders at high)?
Specifically I'm thinking about a single GPU OCZ and the Sager 5793, because both can be had for under 2k, but I don't know if the resolution will be supportable by the WUXGA screens that typically come in them.
Thanks. -
thnx for the replies. by the take of it, it seems that the game at WSXGA is fair resolution to run on. i wonder if there is any way where i can purchase some sort of screen display that would limit the amount of glare i would recieve from a glossy screen, that would be great.

Also, what kind of FPS are you getting in general? 30ish? 40ish?
I'm under the impression that all dx9 / openGL based games are much less demanding than the DX10 counterparts (and coincidentally not many awesome dx10 games have even come out).
I wish there was some way to tell generally how much of a performance hit one takes when scaling up the resolution one step.
Thanks for the input.
And @the op, Who is selling the 5793 w/ a WSXGA+ display? The only one's i've seen have been WUXGA+. -

Get the highest resolution you can afford. Displays scale well enough with lower non-native resolutions that you won't be able to tell much of a difference while gaming. Just keep the 16:10 aspect ratio and you'll be fine.
With a WUXGA display you have about 78% more screen real estate, which means you can see a lot more while surfing the web and doing other non-gaming activities. Also, with a WUXGA resolution it is actually practical to use two windows side-by-side unlike with WXGA+. -
i play at native res. and i get in the 30-40 range on average
-
On WUXGA, I can completely max out (16xAA, 16xAS) Left 4 Dead with 40-60FPS. If the 9800M GTS is similar to the 8800M GTX, you shouldn't have to worry.
-
I would prefer WUXGA for a 17" screen.
Though after seeing the difference between glossy and matte, I don't think I can go back to matte -
can any1 post sum pics of the difference between WUXGA and WSXGA+ plz

i have an 8800GTS and im glad my res is only 1440x900, anything higher this GPU wouldnt pull well on max settings; fallout 3 i barely get 50fps on highest settings often 35 or lower, this is without AA
a 9800GTS is about 10% faster if i remember correctly
and there is a huge difference between running games native vs non-native; i say go for the lower-res screen you can always add AA if you have spare GPU power
