I've seen from time to time people asking where to buy games that were coded in BASIC and on casette tape. You can find most of these at gog.com (good old games).
Ok, so maybe not BASIC and maybe not cassette tape, but they have some great classics that cost either $5.95 or $9.95 US. They are also configured to work with XP and Vista, which many of these had issues or required significant workarounds to get them to work.
This is your public announcement in its own thread, instead of buried in many threads. This kills my rep chances though, but that's ok. It's all for the greater good, whatever that is.
The games are all DRM free. You buy, you download, you own. You also can download again indefinitely from gog.com.
What kind of games might you ask? Well check out some of these classics:
- Fallout, Fallout 2
- Descent, Descent 2, Descent 3
- Descent Freespace, Freespace 2
- Operation Flashpoint
- Unreal Tournament 2004
- MDK
- IL-2
- Prince of Persia
If a game you want is not listed, then be sure to add or vote at their wishlist. Although they have been adding new games on a regular basis, and address issues relatively quickly too.
I do not work for, nor am associated with gog.com, but I'd be happy to take donations.

I've read about that site before, but just checked it out now. I never realized how extensive it was...
I might just have to scoop up a copy of Duke Nukem 3D now, possibly the original Far Cry as well.
Also, the whole Unreal collection is nice too, but to buy them all there would cost $40, and for the same price on Steam you can get those same 4 games, plus Unreal Tournament 3. And I can verify complete compatibility with Vista on the Steam versions too. -
The need to get Total Annihilation up there
An old strategy game, but definitely a goody. And it runs on anything now a days. I remember reading articles about it from back then, with people saying "even with my system upgraded to 96MB of RAM, the game still chugs"
Oh how fast technology progresses...
-
Descent, here I come. Good link, thanks man.
-
I may not be an old fart, but the original Fallout is one of my favorite computer games!
-
they left out baldur's gate and icewind dale series D: was looking forward to revisiting some of the classic rpg's.
-
every man, woman and child ought to own Descent: Freespace 1 & 2.
And Tie Fighter. -
To each their own. They have games that are hard to find anywhere else, and even if they go belly up your games are still good. I know in some cases you can find it cheaper somewhere else, but this is a good alternative.
-
Agreed 100%. Just hope Tie Fighter finds its way on there.
-
I'd like to see Mech Warrior Mercenaries (Any of the series) on there... mech warrior was the 2nd pc game I owned (duke nukem (2d) was the first)

I took the plunge a couple of weeks ago with gog.com...
I already owned the titles mentioned above (and Tie Fighter...installed and working 100% under XP along with X-Wing and X-Wing: Alliance) with the exception of Flashpoint and MDK...
I picked up Fallout: Tactics, Sacrifice, Kabuto, M.A.X. and Antares Rising.
gog.com has excellent pricing...and most everything worked right after the download and install...M.A.X. runs under DosBox...and I couldn't get sound to work on Tactics until I found (on a Fallout fansite) that you had to delete the Miles Sound System (mss???.dll) files to prevent the game from trying to use that sound system by default on modern, incompatible hardware...Peter from gog.com was very responsive to my requests for help, and after I found the solution on the other website, they were quick to include the fix on gog.com...
Antares Rising was a very difficult game to run under XP, and whatever they've done, it worked perfectly right after install...
Only a couple of minor issues...some of the programs use customized wrappers and you end up showing two identical programs on your 'Add/Remove' list...one for the wrapper install (gog stuff) and one for the actual game...I'm not a big fan of wrappers unless the person who created it tells me exactly what it does (I love my 3dfx wrapper, but I know what it does and how it works)...
Other than that, great prices, great games, great community and decent support...much better than most publishers' support...Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
I'm surprised...no X-COM? That'd be nice to get again.
-
I'm itching to get Duke Nukem 3D and add the High Resolution Patch 4.0... It makes some great changes to the looks of the game.
Bought Disciples 2 a while ago, one of my favorite strategy games. -
I can't wait to see their game catalogue expand. A lot of these old games are still just as fun these days
-
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
Games I'd like to see:
System Shock 2
Homeworld
Homeworld 2
Far Cry is a free full game download from gamershell.com I believe (ad supported). As is PoP: SoT and many other older games. -
you need to register with ubisoft for far cry to work. ubi disabled it a long time ago, afaik. basicly the ad supported game will not work. but i think steam has far cry for less than $10, i got it for £5.
-
Hi, I have a question. What do you mean by "the game were coded on casette tape"? The only thing I can think of is the game on floppy disk.....
-
Believe it or not, computers used tapes before they used disks.... and they actually looked like casette tapes that you'd play in your radio. I remember my old Adam computer, it had DUAL tape drives! Wooohooo!
-
When you said 'oldies' I thought you mean Ghosts N Goblins, Spy vs Spy and Gauntlet. You are still talking about youngsters if you are talking about games like UT2004 and Far Cry.
-
lol, true. far cry is only 5 years old.
for me an oldie would be pre-2000.
and it makes me sad that apparently i'm an 'old fart'. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
I'm only 18 and I grew up with these games.... Great times, games for old farts would be like original tetris and pong
-
Sadly, I'd have to hope they put this up too. I actually had the original game, but then I think gave it to a friend who then lost it....
All I really remember the last time I played it was that the game somehow aged incredibly well. -
Can you download to more than one computer like you can with steam?
-
AWESOME! i was looking everywhere for Fallout 1+2! thanks SO much Wingnut!
-
It's like Direct2Drive. You buy, you download, you own, no DRM. You can download unlimited times from their site too. But obviously quicker to just save to external or network drive and load on as many PC's as you'd like (of course should be your own).
-
That seems really nice. I like being able to use a game without internet.
