I have a 8600M GT and i'm looking to overclock it to try to play Crysis at higher settings. unless i bring settings down to medium, i feel that Crysis is quite far from playable. I've read the stickies on the 8600M and overclocking/stability guide, and currently I'm downloading 3dmark06 and RivaTuner

    1. does overclocking decrease longevity of my computer?
    2. would it be beneficial to use a laptop cooler for an OC'd computer?
    3. i've heard of horror stories about fried cards. how can i prevent it from happening to me?

    thanks for any help :)

    1. No, as long as the temperature is still a good bit below the threshold, there wont be any problems. Too much heat is what kills the card, not the overclocking itself.

    2. Certainly wouldnt hurt!

    3. Yeah, go slow, test, make sure its stable, and your good to go!

    1. I've been able to OC without much of a heat increase; once I added a cooler My OC temps were lower than normal temps without the cooler. If you can do this than I don't see any reason for your card to have problems.
    2. Read above
    3. Use a cooler, monitor temps closely and check that it is stable.

3.) you will get blue screens or etc far before you fry your card. causing physical damages might be more difficult than you think.
