Do you guys still play old games? And which ones? Often enough I still find myself reaching in my library of old games. MechWarrior 2 is still my favorite. Too bad it won't run in XP or Vista. Keeps throwing too many errors. Doom still works though.

Duke Nukem 3D, Atomic Bomberman.

I do. Total Annihilation, StarCraft and Counterstrike (Which is 9 this year). Man, that makes me feel old.
-
- StarLancer and X-Wing Alliance are nice space shooters I play often.
- The Jedi Knight II - Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy pack although it's not THAT old. -
Tough part is sometimes getting these classics to work. I keep an old Pentium II handy with Windows 98. Runs all DOS based games. I only hope it'll keep on running itself. It showing its age.
-
The_Punisher - you ought to check out DOSBox. It's a great DOS emulator that I use to run all my old games. I haven't run into a problem with it yet for emulating anything.
As far as classic games...I prefer them. I don't play very many modern computer games. I'm a huge Doom junkie and I play it all the time. -
+1 rep for that one. Thanks, I'll Google it and give it a try. Maybe I can retire the old Pentium II. That thing must be almost a decade old now.
-
I recently finished Mechwarrior 4. Too bad M$ doesn't want to put out any more MW games.
I take out various classics every now and then on my old consoles. The first 3 Mortal Kombats, Sega Virtua games and others I can't remember right now.
Doom definitely comes out for a spin every now and then. -
Well some old employees of FASA (the makers of MW) recently formed a new studio and bought the rights to the MW franchise amongst others. They're planning to make a new game according to their press release a while ago.
Here's hoping to MechWarrior 5! -
Good, I didn't know that. I'd DEFINITELY jump on MW5.
-
Is there any way to get mechcommander/MC2 working on XP? damn i miss that game...
been playing serious sam lately -
MechCommander should run fine, try compatiblity mode otherwise. Haven't played it for awhile though. Omg, was that game difficult. Should get it running again sometime.
I love the Battletech universe. It's great storytelling. My fave is MW2: Mercenaries. There was so much detail in the storytelling and background. I loved it. MW4 was fun, but a little too short IMO. MW2 had a ton of missions to take on. I was also fun to get awfully rich in that game. -
My MC/MC2 worked fine on XP without any errors.
-
MC2 and MW4 both do not run on my machine and its a known issue if you google it. Ran fine on good ol' win98.
-
See, there you go.
Those were great games and sometimes impossible if you didn't cheat. The last mission of MC was just pure punishment. MC2 did a better job with the difficulty level.
And the Clan mechs just pwned. I was so happy one time when in Mission 3 I salvaged a Mad Cat. That thing really helped me tear through the first part of the campaign. -
MW4 should work in XP. When I got it I had an XP machine and it ran with no probs. Strange.
The game isn't that old or demanding. Heck, my old Voodoo 4 handeld the game great. My 9800 Pro tore it up in terms of FPS and my 6800 Ultra. Well... Maybe try compatibility mode? -
All time favourites
-CS1.6
-C&C: RA2
-Grim Fandango
-Theme Hospital
-FF7 -
Theme Hospital, I remember that one.
It was funny when the little doctor said "So you killed your first patient. How does it feel?"
Too bad all my games ended with everyone puking in every nook and cranny of my beautiful hospital... Little janitor guy couldn't hack it anymore and just stayed in the recreation room. -
Freelancer... I liked that game although i wish the plot would have extended a bit furthur into the actual game.
(If you didn't know, the final mission in the plot is not even halfway through the power curve your pilot can achieve if you explore everything... the problem is, there is no way to wait on the plotline missions until after you are piloting a real monster of a combat ship with alien weaponry.) -
I just played through Day of the Tentacle last week, I had never forgot about that game one of the greatest adventure games of all time.
-
SimTower and SimCity 2000.
-
Jagged Alliance 2!
Plus the work they are doing on this game (patch 1.13) over at the Bear's Pit really adds to the longevity of this classic. -
last week i was playing Mafia, a 7 year-old game, i also used to play Age of Mythology and Diablo 2 from time to time, right now i'm thinking about trying the Fallout series, people are saying great things about these classic games and i'd like to try them out..
-
Some games just keep you comming back to them. Those are the real gems. On pretty much all my computers I've installed Doom 1, 2 and Ultimate Doom. Every know and then I still play a quick game.
Metal Gear Solid (PC/PS1) was pretty memorable too. It really got me hooked on the MGS series. The Ninja is just so cool. I loved how they made a "remake" of the game with The Twin Snakes. They updated the looks and the gameplay but kept the original dialogue. IMO more classics deserve this treatment. Bring them back to modern PC's with updated looks and gameplay. -
DOSBox ftw, and any emu really.. I live on Atari ST games
Eye of the Beholder, Master of Magic...
Civilization 1 .. I may adore Civ IV, but Civ 1 is portable (run it on your PDA or PSP or the like via emulation) and is a timeless classic.
So many classic old games.. *sniff*

I just tried DOSbox and its great. MW2 runs flawlessly and MW2: Mercs took al little more effort but with a hack it works. The memories...
You just can't beat some old games. -
Doom II, Descent, Commander Keen 4, Scorched Earth, Xargon, Sim City 2000, Prince of Persia, etc.
-
Nobody can resist old games.

I'm really surprised at the amount of people still playing older games.
-
Doom 2
Commander Keen
Duke Nukem 3D
Command and Conquer
Starcraft (woohoo!)
Blood
Theme Hospital
Warcraft 2
Loads of others that I can't remember. I can't believe I didn't play the Day of the Tentacle and the Monkey island series.
I tried out DOSbox, but it seems to run the CPU at 100% all the time and heat up a lot. I'm worried that it may cause problems, since I don't see how old games can cause that much heat.
I don't know why they removed DOS support from Vista... surely there must have been some way to keep it around. -
It might have something to do with how you have DOSBox configured. I do remember it had some issues on Vista but I can't remember what exactly (I remember my HP's keyboard wasn't mapped properly)
I run most of my old stuff on DOSBox but I do it on my laptop which still has XP installed.
You can control how many cycles DOSBox emulates which is useful for controlling the speed of the emulation for different games. -
Star Wars: Dark Forces, and Wolfenstein top my list.
-
i played grim fandango about 3 times, it's just the most awesome adventure game ever
i wish i could play dungeon keeper 2 but i can't get it to play on my laptop, some 3D issues
another great one is jedi knight 2. then you've got all the awesome RPGs like fallout 1 and 2, baldurs gate 1 and 2, ice windale -
Red Alert 2 - my all-time favourite!
-
DOSbox has some issues with Vista, but thats no problem. I still have an XP laptop and its just fine. Its nice to have some of these classics on my work laptop so I can play them a bit when I have to wait or just get bored.
I loved original Command & Conquer. The acting was so cheesy. I bought the First Decade just to play it again in XP/Vista. A 640*480 res just looks painful on a huge screen, but back then on my tiny CRT it was just fine. And I was amazed at the graphics back then. -
Lots of good oldies listed on this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=212747&page=6&highlight=oldies
Best sites to find abandoned old game downloads:
- Abandonia
- Home of the Underdogs
Software needed to run oldies on new hardware and OS:

And definitely get this frontend for Dosbox. Makes it a lot easier to use.
That WDMSound might work better with some games that run too slowly on DOSBox. -
There are a lot of emulators out there to help running older games. Thanks for the links.
It's just a shame if some classics get lost because they don't function on modern hardware. -
-
Planescape: Torment
Final Fantasy VII (Still keep going back to that time to time)
Fallout 1/2
Counter-Strike -
I've already logged it in my favorites. They even have super old MechWarrior games.
-
settlers.. how can i forget about that..
-
OMG, they even have ancient Star Trek games. This site is great.
Golden oldies
