Looking for recommendations on a certain type of game; I'm not even particularly sure what genre they'd be called. Essentially, they're games that are kind of like electronic versions of the board game Risk with minor (or major if it's available) RPG style elements of leveling up and that stuff. Not looking for plot driven RPG style games, can find plenty of those. Not stuff like Starcraft either, although they're entertaining enough I'm looking for a game to play that's not online competitive driven at the moment. Just a simple, build an army, conquer the map, win, kind of game.

Used to play these old Chinese games based on the Three Kingdoms period with these types of engines, and although they are highly repetitive I highly enjoyed them to kill time.

Prefer if they were commercially released, but I'll take what I can get. Doesn't have to be the most cutting edge game out there, stuff developed in the mid-to-late '90s is perfectly entertaining to me. Thanks if anyone can provide any suggestions.

Popolous and it's sequels. It's a very old game so maybe you should use a emulator to play it correctly.

Personally, my fav old game is Magic Carpet 2 :p

I really liked all of the Rise of Nations and Age of Mythology games. Those were very good for their time and still are fun to this day. You should check those out they are probably really cheap.

Total War series, mainly Rome and even Medieval II if you got yourself a nice machine, a nice RTS and turn-based-Strategy hybrid since you mentioned you found starcraft entertaining.
Civilization IV is a perfect game to kill time, although it does way more than just killing your time, i suggest you to get the beyond the sword expansion too.

btw, you mentioned three kingdoms. are you talking about this game?

Any from the Europa Universalis series. There's less of the emphasis on building up as in the Civ games, and a lot more on international politicking. Warfare is there, but to win you have to be skilled at balancing the worries of your future targets.

The people who made Age of Empires made Age of Mythology ... it's only $10 at Walmart.

    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5614661

Rise of Nations is only $10 too ...

    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5614662

Tons of old conquest action for only $20 ... can't beat that ... here are the reviews as well.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll see if I can hunt down some of these off Amazon.

I've played all the Age of Empire games and though they're great games, it's not what I'm currently looking for. My aim right now is a large scale war game, where the goal is to conquer the map, not straight elimination of opponents.

Civ4 is a "Conquer the map" gameplay. You will need to make allies, trade, and use extreme strategy (when on hard) to conquer the world.

Maybe check out the Total War series of games. That's got some large scale battles, and you have to conquer so much of the map to win.

The Total War Games, I personally started with Shogun: Total War.

Rise of Nations (and it's expansion) will pretty closely fit your description, take over an entire map one scenario/province at a time.

Otherwise, Dawn of War: Dark Crusade (available on Steam) also features a war map that must be conquered province by province while defending attackers.

I can't think of a perfect representation of what you are asking for (RoN or Total War being closest), but I have been looking for the exact same game for many years. I think what came closest was a StarCraft online custom map where the game Risk was essentially copied for real-time play.

"Space Clash" is a good game of conquest... but it's in spanish, despite the titling. I don't know if there is an english version of it, but it's a great game that goes beyond the simple "killing every enemy".

Ordered Civ IV and Total War to try out. The games I was originally talking about that I was trying to find similar games of is the "Sango" series from a Taiwanese company Odinsoft. Some pictures attached to the type of game I was specifically seeking.

The first picture is the world map, where it's divided into individual little fortresses as opposed to traditional RTS games where you build bases with town hall here, and barracks here, and supply depots here. More like if you've ever played the console game Final Fantasy Tactics, those types of locations. The goal of the game is to send an army to each location, where you will come into a fight with the army already stationed at the fortress, and if you beat them, you take that fortress and capture their generals who you can recruit or kill off.

The second picture shows the start of a battle, it's basically a 2d side scroll map, instanced battle, as opposed to traditional RTS combat (this is completely turn based). Your guys on one side, enemy on the other, you charge at each other, infantry and generals brawl it out, and you can cast magic spells and all these weird little gimmicks. Fighting system primarily menu driven, as opposed to point and click style from Starcraft esque games

That was the kind of game I was specifically looking for, simple, take over all fortresses on the map and you're the winner. If anyone knows of any that fit that type of genre specifically, it'd be great. The Odinsoft Sango series is as far as I know, excluse to Chinese, so not as enjoyable for me as a game that's similar but in English. Of course, they're simple enough games (the early ones anyway) that if anyone wants to try out dumb fun, they're good games.

They've been mentioned in the thread already, but I'll vouch for the Total War Series, Sins of a Solar Empire, and Civ4 as games I've played that are all quite good and fit into your description. Sins of a solar empire has spaceships instead of armies but is essentially the same thing, the only difference between it being that it is real time instead of turn based (If I remember correctly), although it is still quite slow paced.

Also, if you own a Sony PSP, there is a game called Generation of Chaos for it that plays similarly.

Yup, SoaSE is real time, but slow enough that it plays alot like turn based. Very much strategic over tactical.

Don't bother with space empires V unless you can tolerate 5+ minute turn times.

    That's why I quited xD
There were no goddamn instructions! Luckily the game was from a friend of mine and I didn't pay for the 15 minutes of staring blankly at the screen with a huge "WTF" look.
