I think only decent offerings last few months is the expansions to the Il-2 sturmovik series which has been good (im a not a fan of flight simluations).
-
Top Gun for the NES. It's a little old but it's fun.
-
mattireland It used to be the iLand..
MS Flight Simulator for DOS is actually really good. I play it every day still even though I have to boot it off floppies.
Just on a totally different note as your sig picture says - do you like airsoft? Just got my new SA80 yesterday and is soo cool. Can hit centre of target 40 metres away with the SUSAT sight. The ****ing handle actually comes back when you fire it as well - it's so cool! -

Il-2? what is that? O_O.
EDIT:yeah I airsoft...I recently quit and sold all my guns though, for my Sager NP5790 of course, =)
I had a...
Maruzen APS2, spent 1600 dollars on it, shot 550 fps...
TM M4SD...I call it the M4 SAW...full systema, shot about 415 fps, spent about 1300 dollars on it, shot at least 40 bbs per second
TM M4SD SIR: mostly systema and guarder parts, spent about 1200 dollars on it
that's all the AEGs and sniper rifles, don't get me started on GBBs lol... -

IL2 1946, although a bit dated, it's certainly one of the best combat flight sims I've ever played. The first time I booted it up I was amazed how well actual flight physics were replicated in a PC sim. (and I have real flight hours logged) The game features a broad range of aircraft and difficulty settings to appease the masses.
If you're just looking for a decent stick I'd recommend trying to find yourself an older USB saitek Cyborg Gold. The Cyborg is nice and stiff, solidly built and fairly ergonomically adjustable. I've yet to find a stick better suited to my interests without parting with $100. Not sure about Vista with this though. -

Microsoft Flight Simulator series are mainly catering around Civil Aircrafts, not combat, though you can download add-on combat aircrafts, but there won't be any explosions or missiles. There is no combat system in these kinds of simulators.
Don't forget X-Plane also...
Civil Aircraft Flight Simulators mainly focus on the experience of being able to fly an aircraft, from taking-off to landing, navigation, using instruments etc... Learning curve is long and complicated...
However, Combat Flight Simulators can get you into air and start shooting very quickly, depends on how realistic you want the simulator to be, some are arcade style like Heroes of the Pacific, while others are more serious and realistic like IL-2, Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator series...
It depends on what era of airplanes you want to fly, IL-2 mainly focuses on various aircrafts from WWII/Cold War, while Lock On: Modern Air Combat has a range of modern combat aircrafts from US and Russia.
see lists of flight simulators on Wikipedia:

i've heard about this other flying simulator called LOMAC (Lock On: Modern Air Combat) thats supposed to be pretty fun, although i havent tried it myself.

LOMAC is an very good modern flight sim, very steep learning curve depending on your settings. It is also a pretty brutal program to run, Even many high end desktop systems can be brought to their knees by this game, even though it's not a new title.

Lock On: modern air combat for pc and ace combat series for ps2

Anyone know of any online fight combat games? Online dogfights ftw!

LOMAC sucks, it has bad graphics and runs like crap.
Poorly optimized game. -
european air war ftw!
old game but lotsa mods to it, where else can you fly a corsair during the battle of britain
if u want to play against the comp i've had over 120+ airplanes in the air at once, not sure if there lotsa servers up for EAW anymore for online play -

Bad Graphics? Not really but definitely not the best running program. The photo below is a almost maxed out shot on a 100" projector screen, looks good IMO.
This is however being run on my desktop system. -
Pretty much every flight simulator has a multiplayer session, however, there won't be a lot of players.

If you are looking for a good World War II dogfighting/bombing game there's really only one option... IL2 1946. Its flight model is incredibly realistic (And I've got a number of flight hours in real aircraft), its got a ridiculously large selection of aircraft, from older bi-wing planes to the deadly jet powered Me-262 and Ar-234B Blitz Bomber. Furthermore, even though the game itself is a couple of years old now the graphics, especially of the planes, is still quite good. Its also still receiving regular updates that not only correct bugs and tweak the flight model, but even add entirely new aircraft.
And it can be found very cheap at places like Amazon, costing 20 dollars or less. IL2 1946 Amazon Store And it is easily worth every penny.
If you are looking for a combat flight simulator, there's really only one real option, and that option is IL2 1946. -
mattireland It used to be the iLand..
WOW! That airsoft collection is pretty cool. The most I've ever spent is my £70 CO2 pistol, my £250 M429 and my beautiful new SA80 which the fuse went in today and who the heck sells a 20A glass tube fuse in time for my huge game on Friday?!?!?!!?
-
The only game that I have ever had fun flying in is Battlefield 2. I have tried out an assortment of more "realistic" simulators and they just bore me and I am actually a pilot.
*Although I haven't played IL-2 yet. -

Get Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. Forget the storyline, just use the cheat to get a jet and fly it around. Once you get the hang of it, you can do flips and stuff. The hardest thing I can do is fly under a series of bridges upside down.
-
FSX any day, though I'm training to be an airline pilot so I will say that.
To get the best experience you might want to invest in a decent joystick and rudder pedals, though I actually get on quite well with the XBOX 360 joypad. -
-
How many hours are you at? I'm about 250 right now. I just got my single engine sea and instrument done recently and am preparing for my multi-engine commercial checkride right now. -
all i did on fsx was try do the one where you had to land the plane on a bus, and the flour bombs. i killed so many hours there.
-
mattireland It used to be the iLand..
WoW! You had to land the plane on a bus? I might get that one

Sager NP5790: The Pilot's Laptop -
LOMAC, when you just have to have a game that doesn't let you fly any aircraft.
Seriously though, that game has more unflyable aircraft than any other game I've seen in a long time. Why have the aircraft in the game if you can't use them? -
i play my games on my ps2..oldskool baby!!
ill take any ace combat game anyday... -
Acecombat games are great. They are just way way too short and don't have any replayability for me at least.
-
Thanks.. -
I believe the average for a single engine land private certificate is around 7,000-10,000 USD. This is very dependent on the aircraft type, age and overall quality of instruction. I spent quite a bit more but I did mine in G1000 aircraft (i.e. lcd panels vs. gauges)
-
ah..yes the Garmin G1000 full glass/multifunction display...really awesome looking... thanks for answering.

If you want to play a flight sim with great physics and 100s of online players try
http://www.hitechcreations.com
for the ww2 game Aces High II.
Aces High has the ability to command tanks and PT boats as well. You can also choose to take up a flight of 3 bombers with two of them being robots that follow you in formation.
AH is free for 2 weeks with then 15 bucks a month. Try it at least.
Its hardware requirements will be fine with a gaming laptop.
Il2 is great, I have played 100s of hours of both games. The game is sold for 20 bucks now and will run ok on a laptop. Its focus is not online so the areas are smaller and dont really have a memory of what is going on in the world. But there are great online dogfights to be had and good campaign missions with good skill bad guys for a learner.
Il 2 is here
http://www.pacific-fighters.com
and it looks like this.
For flight sticks it depends how serious you are. A single stick with twist for rudder and a lever for throttle? Or a set with real separate rudders and throttle?
For the first Saitech is good, so is logitech. For the second Saitech makes them but I recommend CH Products.
For a note book the single stick version might be a good idea as it only takes one usb port. -
mattireland It used to be the iLand..
OMG - thsoe graphics are just over the top. There's good graphics and then there's just way over the top graphics.
What's wrong with a PS2? And there's loads of good games for it like crashbandicoot. LOL.
Good Flying Game?
