Hey all, I am on summer break and I am thinking about buying some kind of RPG game now that I have more time. I kind of would want to try an online game, and I would prefer not to pay. Any suggestions...Thanks!![]()

Well the only thing i could think of is Guildwars. It's isn't really classed as RPG, but got some RPG feeling to it. If you like PvP you will like it, but if you like "REAL" RPG's this game can't offer much.
This game has an "RPG campaign" and a "PVP campaign" sort of. Usually u start playing the RPG campaign to unlock skills to use in the PvP part. I havn't tryed the PvP part myself. I like the adventuring part, but that part hasn't got much replay value in this game so i'm quite bored after getting 3 chars to level 20 doing the exactly same thing, and this game is no fun to play alone ..
But you should defenetly try it out.. It's a good starter and it doesnt cost anything per month..

*** One more thing. This game looks quite beutiful, but isn't very graphically intense. Most graphic cards can handle this one even at pretty high settings. -

I tell you: Oblivion all the way!
Great game!

But That's not an Online Game, And Oblivion isn't Really RPG either unless you download some good Mods. =( So dissapointed by oblivion, Not Graphically, but Gameplay wize, and No RPG feeling whatsover, and those annoying voices.. hundreds of chars in the game all sounding the same. And that ridicoulous quest compass... There's no effort in doing quests, no puzzle, no mystery, no searching and llearning. Just fast click the conversation and follow the red arrow on the compass.. Really booring... and everything levels wit the char. It' doesnt even seem that you are getting stronger. As you progress so do the monsters... Very bad gamplay. I'd prefer if you would hesitate to adventure to deep in dungeouns in start.. There should be a better of mix of high and low level monsters through the game, all in all. Keeping you away from some areas at lower levels and returning when you're stronger.
I spent more time downloading mods and tweaking graphic settings than actually playing. There was too much things i didn't like. Bethesda didnt deliver considering their reputation as a good RPG developer. The made a console Game going for the money rather than doing a good game for devoted fans, since Daggefall.
Luckily there are modders fixing these issues, but the game as it came in the box, plain suxxed big time. -

Interesting...
After Zelda Ocarina of Time I find Oblivion the best RPG. But thats my taste

KOTOR and KOTOR2 aren't online but very solid RPG Star Wars-themed offline games. I liked KOTOR2 better because it didn't cap your levels so early as the first one, but it has a very bad coding resulting in tweaking the .ini files and I won't say much about what happens at the end, but up to a certain point, it's a very good game.

If you want an online RPG, but don't want to pay, you don't hve many good options. MMORPGs cost money because they have to spend millions to keep the servers up, keep them updated, create new content, service the players, have enough bandwidth, etc, etc, etc.
If you really want a good online RPG, you'll have to pay per month, however, when you take this into perspective, you're actually saving money. You pay once for one MMORPG, and then you pay the monthly fee of around $12-15USD, however, with MMORPGs, there is SO much to do in the game, your interest for other games dwindles and you only play this game. So, in effect, you save money by not buying a new game every week or so.
If you're interested in MMORPGs the best in my opinion are:
Final Fantasy XI - This game is LONG, HUGE, and IMMERSIVE, you can easily clock several thousand hours of gameplay onto it and get nowhere, that is, if you slack off like I did, for several months. =X This is one of the harder MMORPGs out that takes effort to learn, and it's very slow-paced as far as leveling goes, thus, many don't like it. It is, however, the 2nd most popular MMORPG in the world, or rather, populated.
World of Warcraft - I personally don't like this game, but it is the most populated MMORPG there is so they can't all be wrong... It's faster paced than FFXI and takes less of a commitment, you can solo easier and get to end-game rather quickly as MMORPGs go. -
Thanks for the post everyone, good to have some feedback.

RPG games that you dont have to pay for? the list runs short...check out D2X, GW, NWN (and expansions, modules), there are also some free servers for EQ, and some free shards for UO (old, but pretty cool game)..

Neverwinter Nights 2 is coming soon as well, I believe.
-
-
WoW is an option, and $30~ for 2 months isn't that bad.
I play at times, with friends only solo'ing is indeed possible, but takes the fun out of it. PvP is quite interesting, especially when the Horde and Alliance meet up by chance on a questing grounds. Chaos and, hilarity insured -
It looks interesting, I hope the horrible control scheme from the first wasn't copied, using left and right to alter the camera and forward and backward to move was just plain annoying to me...
If this was changed at some time, I don't know as the control sc heme bothered me that much.
As for WoW, its big appeal is that you can solo when you want, do whatever you want, etc.
I don't like that because you're playing a MMORPG, and I play it because of the second M.
That does sound like fun, sometimes, though if you're trying to get something done...
SE recently added besieged to FFXI in which hoards of monsters attack the towns, I haven't gotten a chance to do it yet but it looks fun.. -
Heck, go old school and get Neverwinter Nights 1. It's a classic, and the mod community is huge.
-
D2X = ? I have no idea wich one that is.
GW = Guild Wars
NWN = Neverwinternights i suppose.
UO = No idea either. -

Someone made a list of MMORPGs on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MMORPGs
I didn't look over every entry, but I think some of those might be stretching the definition of MMORPG a bit. Alot of the stuff is browser or text-based as well. Many are probably defunct too, heh. Either way, it does have a section for free games; just remember, you get what you pay for (in this case, nothing).
Oh, and UO = Ultima Online. -
D2X = Diablo 2 w/expansion (Lord of Destruction)..one of the first games i played...and i played it since 1.0 up until maybe a year ago...long time, great game.
GW= Guild Wars
NWN= neverwinter nights, with expansions and modules....the 2nd comes out soon i think
UO= Ultima online..the first MMORPG i ever heard of, and the first i ever played for free ...free shards rock.

Diablo 2, a classic
-
Thanks for all of the help. So should I fork out the money and go for WoW over GW?

Anyone know if there's still a demo/trial subscription to WoW still available? I know they did it awhile back, possibly in conjunction with a pc gaming magazine....
Guess I'm trying to say, is that you could check to see which MMOs are currently running demo versions, maybe try it out first to see if you like it.
And I missed this earlier:
Opposing factions used to sack the others' towns alot in the early days of the game. It used to be a blast to join up with a ragtag group of allied players to exact retribution. -
Hey that is a good idea. I will look around online for some free demos. That is one of the easiest ways to get a feel for the games. Thanks!
-
Liek someone has stated, a good MMORPG will have a monthly cost and not free to play as they will add content and updates in it periodicly.
If you are not a veteran MMORPG player, WoW is a decnt game to start with.
many Veteran MMORPG players consider it a "Beginner" Type of MMORPG.
To be honest, at this time the MMORPG market is saturated with less than quality products.
I have played many MMORPG in their Closed/Open Beta and Retail versions.
At this time I actually am playing mostly BF2, the very 1st FPS I have played since Doom1!
I am trying to play F.E.A.R. also at times in single player mode when my wife and son is sleeping so I can have a nice dark atmospehere and sound at a moderately high setting.
(Personally think BF2 is 10x better than F.E.A.R. in Multiplayer)
Another good website that I frequent alot is MMORPG.COM.
It is a website dedicated to MMORPG News and should list most of the games that are either released, in Beta or in Development. -
Does it have to be 3D... Uggh...
Try Maple Story...
Try Rakion...
This is not an RPG, but it got me hooked for a while...
Gunbound!
Oh, and if you decide that you don't want it to be online anymore, go download ZSNES and this really awesome game by the same people as the Final Fantasy Series: "Super Mario RPG: The Legend Of The Seven Stars." If you beat Smithy, you're my hero. -
Ah, Super Mario RPG. I remember that game. I always wanted it back in the day when SNES was big, but I was a poor little kid, lol. Thanks for all of the help everyone, I am getting ready to take my laptop apart to put in some AS5 and paint it, so I won't be playing any games for a while. I am thinking about giving WoW of try though...Thanks again!!!
-
EC: I didn't mean that, yeah you get things done faster in a group, but I don't like that you can do things so easily solo. Sorry if I wasn't clear.
lmark: Consider FFXI too, it's somewhat like WoW just slower-paced and in my opiinion more difficult.. -
Yea, I may do that as well.
-
Best MMO that's not pay-to-play is Guild Wars, is it not?
-
That depends, there a lot of client based MMOs that a lot of people like a lot more than Guild Wars.
-
If you speak turkish and want to sell your soul you could try Knight Online. The graphics are basically crap, but its free to download and free to play. I was addicted for a few months, heavily, but I'm over it now.
-
I don't know if you can say it's good because I haven't played many online RPG's, but try out Silk Road at www.silkroadonline.net
Best part is it's FREE~!!!!! Graphics are great, gameplay is great, pretty simple game though, not too complicated with many spells and stuff like that.
Servers are kinda loaded and there is frequent lag, but still a great game~! -
Thank you! I'll take a look!
-
-
if you start WoW, come over to Lightninghoof....my name is Snnm there..give me a /t
if you start FFXI, come on Valefor (i can get you a world pass to join this server) and give a /t to Lamshot
yes great names..i know
pb,out. -
Hey pbcustom, um...what does /t mean, sorry, I am not up to speed on all of these acronyms. I will let you know for sure if I do purchase one though!
Thanks for the invite!
-
/t is a short for /tell command in most online game. It means send a tell or message to the individual.
-
Likewise, if you wanna join FFXI I can get you a pass to Titan. =X
-
Thanks and thanks!
-
either game is good, just depends on what your looking for (wow/ffxi)
good luck deciding!
pb,out. -
Thanks for the info everyone !!

I ended up buying Guild Wars, I figure since I have no prior experience with online RPGs, I can't be dissapointed and things can only get better. Unfortunately, I am havining serious troubles with our wireless network so I haven't really been able to play yet.
-
Have fun with GW. I've never played it, but it looks interesting. I used to play some Everquest and Anarchy Online, but never got hooked like I have on WoW. I wouldn't necessarily call WoW strictly a beginner's MMO. True, it is alot more beginner friendly then others, but it's not child's play. There's LOTS of things to do and accomplish "end game" in WoW. And depending on how much of a life you have, it can take alot longer to get to level 60 then some people seem to make it sound. lol
-
Thanks. So far it has been fun, except my wireless network is acting up...grr.......
-
Oooh, no fun.
-
yea, wireless fixed. router went bad. got new one. now off to some Guild Wars!
-
planescape torment
Good RPG game.
