Could anyone give me some good ideas for single player RPGs? My laptop can run Crysis on decent settings, so high performance games are not an issue. I just want to know what some of the best RPGs are out there.

Could try Titan Quest, its like diablo but set in ancient Greece (on steam its $19.95 plus it comes with the expansion pack), also Hellgate London is good but it can get buggy, Oblivion and Morrowind are also good choices. Should also try to see what the modding commnities do with the games as it can extend the life of the game after you complete it.

Those are good ones as well except Hellgate. It crashed 3 times while I was trying to build my character. I don't know how they were able to release it. I was thinking about Age of Conan, but it seems that the game will require too much time. I work full time and go to school full time so I don't think that I'd be able to manage that.

Seeing as you have time constraints I'd recommend either Oblivion or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (FPS with RPG elements), otherwise I'd recommend to wait for either Mass Effect or Fallout 3 they sound as they might be good but just wait till the reviews come in first.

I had Stalker, but kind of got bored of it. Oblivion is great, but I used to have it for the 360, and just don't wan to start over again. I was actually reading up on Fallout 3 today; sounds interesting.

I also recommend the KOTOR games. Both are great. The first one has a more compelling story, but the second one has a more in depth combat and customization aspect. Also, check out Jade Empire.

Although it's old, I'd recommend Oblivion.

I just love wide-open games where you have maximum freedom to do whatever you want.

KOTOR seems more of a niche game gameply wise.

I really despised KOTOR and had no urge to play it again.

I really enjoyed Dark Messiah even though a lot of people didn't.

Oblivion was decent for it's side quests... Main quest is lame.

WoW is great if you play with friends. But sucks when they quit.

Ultima Online is wonderful... and I am still playing on a free shard.

    Never played the witcher.

PC just doesnt seem to have the greatest rpg market. However lucky for us if your ok with old school graphics we can run emulators for all the great games of the past.

    SNES:
    > Legend of Zelda a Link to the Past
    > Final Fantasy 3 (6)
    > Secret of Mana
    > Seikendensetsu 3 (Secret of mana 2)
    > Chrono Trigger

That small list there is the very core of RPG and the best games of all time in my opinion.

    Since then other great classics.

    Playstation:
    > Xenogears
    > Final Fantasy 7

    Nintendo 64
    > Zelda 64 Ocorina of Time

All 3 run on my computer fine with a playstation/N64 emulator and I own all of them so its legal.

    Other good ones...

Pretty much any of the Zelda games on game cube, Okami for PS2 or Wii, Suikoden for playstation (spelling), super mario 64. Still many more.

PC games only tho? I have tried them all and the only one I liked was Phantasy Star Universe, it's a MMORPG but it also has a full fledged 1 player offline story mode that was very good.

Well I kinda tied it in with zelda 64, its the same idea but with abit of a platformer in there. By the definition of RPG yes it is one. You play the role of mario :p

Paper Mario is what I meant to say tho, and me and my wife both liked super paper mario on our wii.

I was always a big diablo 2 fan and now i play Titan Quest: Immortal Throne, essentially it is diablo 2 set in a different era. Graphics and game design are much better though.

The Witcher is always good but the problem is once you've completed the game it's over, and the game isn't that long, little disappointing.

I played WOW for a couple of years as well, best game i've played, only reason i quit was because it got in the way of school and my social life! May not be such a good option if you're tight on time.

Warhammer online is coming out some time around June, which from what i've heard isn't designed to be a really time consuming game. I'm definitely going to play it anyway, some interesting new concepts are being introduced there also.

For now Titan Quest: Immortal Throne all the way! BTW you need the originial before you can install the expansion

Well it seems from the numbers of responses, I'll be getting Witcher.

I would have to disagree with the statement that the PC market isn't great for RPGs. Diablo, WoW, and other numerous titles. PC and Sony have the biggest market. NES used to, but it does not seem so much anymore with some exceptions.

I will have to get a PS3 for fighting and driving games as the consoles own those markets.

Eeee....Seriously only 1 person remembers the good ol' times?

Planescape: Torment,Fallout 1 and 2,Baldurs Gate series...those are absolutely superior to the modern ,dumbed-down "rpg's".

But if you want something with eye-candy ,then the Witcher is your best bet.

I'm a little disappointed in the members of NBR. 29 replies and what, only one mention of Fallout 1/2?

Anyway, as of PC, as has already been said, there's really not too many good ones.

Fallout and Fallout deuce fall into that category, but other than that you've really things such as KOTOR and to my recollection not too many else.

As someone else stated, there are emulators out there if you're willing to go that direction, or if you're willing to actually go out and find the original copies. If that's the case I'd be willing to make one or two suggestions though.

    NES:
    Pirates!

    SNES:
    Tales Of Phantasia
    Chrono Trigger
    Bahamut Lagoon
    Super Mario RPG

    PSX:
    Final Fantasy Tactics
    Xenogears
    Suikoden
    Suikoden II
    Lunar
    Lunar Silver Star Story

That's just to start things, though.

WTH... it took 3 pages before someone metioned the BG series?!?

I mean... come on... Probably the best set of RPG's for the PC. Very high value... lots of replay value and great story.

But yeah... other games mentioned are good too. We've been a bit short on D&D type RPG's though. I'm hoping that BG3 will get churned out at some point *crosses fingers*

Arcanum was a really fun PC RPG. It was based around the whole Magic vs Technology angle. Pretty darn cool, not many people played it, but I still have it installed.

I liked Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, but it took about 2 days of work to get it working (and I got it off Steam, too).

The list for good RPG Laptop gamer... I have played plenty types of RPGs and the good thing about PC games, is the MOD :D i mostly play games that either have freedom in decision or exploring, Damn GOOD storyline, a sucker for action-rpg game style and D&D game.

    1) Vampire The masquerade: BLOODLINE= Best rpg and yet a bit buggy but nevertheless the story and action are really cool and you get to see lotsa different races/classes for vampires. You travel around in huge modern-like town and gotta choose your way of vampirism~~~ :D

    2) Fable The Lost Chapter= great story line and an action-rpg that lead your character either being good or evil. The dialog are very funny :D SERIOUSLY... There is no problem with the game, no bug or what so ever..

    3) KOTOR and KOTOR 2: Another good game that let you choose side between the good and evil. A lot of quest and the graphic are quite good.. but the most interesting part is being the JEDI and getting into the story mood.. can mind-control people during conversation. I heard that KOTOR cant be played in some notebook.(It CAN be played its just that the game kinda lag even if you have the graphic card ABOVE the recommended spec, since the game was design for desktop only)

    4) Elder Scroll Oblivion: I re-played this game with my M15x and set everything on high which makes the game, damn beautiful and with free-roaming experience that lead you becoming an adventurer.. Problem with the level system is that when you are high-level so does the monster... which make your NPC friend a bit vulnerable... but with very good VA of the NPC and you can create your own adventurer, the game is great to have!! :D

5)Sudeki: An anime style rpg games that has a very interesting story line and good graphic.. Battle styles are action-rpg and have pretty cool skills trigger. Worth to playing it.

    6) The TWO WORLD: Great RPG game and almost the same as Oblivion except with much nicer graphic.. Currently playing :D

    7) Neverwinter Nights and NWN 2: A great 3D D&D with a lot of item to be found and compelling storyline. Create your own character with lots of classes to choose from and you can even Mix other classes together!!! :D Its like the 3d version of Baldurs Gate!!! :D :D Recommend it very much!!!

    8) Gothic 3: Great graphic since it came out around the same time as the TWO WORLD. Have bought it but havent played it yet, but my friend told me the game was much larger than the other Gothic series and very Stunning graphic.. Worth playing!!

    9) The Witcher: Currently playing also and really like it.. the graphic are just wonderful and very eye-candy.. the story is kinda good (so-so to me) but hey the battle is just as great as the game is..

    10) Silverfall: Although the story arent my thing :( but the good graphic and since the gameplay is action-style so i kinda get into the game without knowing it :D

    11) Dungeon Siege and Dungeon Siege 2: The first one wasnt that great graphic but the story is great to tell and the second one has both good graphic and story is wonderful. You can create your own charater and venture through the forest, desert and other unforgettable places to fight off evil!! Great plot story!! I REALLY REALLY recommend this one for the story!! :D  ;) :)

    12) Hellgate London: FOR THE LIVING!!! kinda exciting at first but the story arent that good and not being told very accurate :( , but the only thing that get me going is the Item. THAT'S RIGHT!! the item is TONs and Plentiful to be found!! and you can modified/Identify/Create/Upgrade it to your heart content!! Very addicting indeed!! :D Its kinda like Diablo, minus the good story...

    13) Dungeon Lords: RPG Dungeon Roaming with action battle, just like Oblivion actually except its not free-roaming and some of it skills/Stats are like in Oblivion such as the Athletic. I played the Collector Edition and was really surprise with the amount of classes you get later in the game. Because there are classes such as the Samurai and Ninja lord and you can even turn into a Darklord/Overlord.

and next list is for OLD SCHOOL GAME!!! WUHUUU!! GIVE IT UP :D :D  !!! been playing it on my desktop since i was middle school until i graduate!! The reason why i played this game( even now im still playing some) is the story that keep me going on, its my engine for playing this game.. No eye-catchy graphic here~~~ except for diablo 2, when it was out it was like the coolest graphic ever :D :D :D

    1) Diablo series: THE BEST OLD SCHOOL GAME EVER MADE AND WILL NEVER DIE!!!!!!! i played the second with all the expansion and then i played the first diablo, after that i re-played the second diablo again just to get the story fresh. The cool thing about this game is that the item are plenty, battle are good, the story!! THE STORY IS THE BEST EVERTOLD!! it really sucks you into the game mood!!

    2) Baldur's Gate series: A great D&D and in fact this is the game that pull me into the D&D world. The game has very good class system and Sub-class, kinda impressive when you thought about how good a 2d game than the 3d game that we have right now.. The story is great and the quest was never ever boring with every character that you meet being soooo alive eventhough they are just some 2d sprite (the magic of good game dialogs :D )

    3) Planescape Tormented: At first i really dont like the whole surrounding, kinda gothic-like. BUT!!! what surprise me the most was none other than the story being told... It was good!!! :D

    4) Fallout series: Hey, everyone played it and everyone know how good it is... i rather like the story but nevertheless the battle is what keep me going on for this game... sure its not like diablo but gotta respect what being told in the game!! :D

I finished BG1 few weeks ago for the fourth time with some great balanced mods (EasyTutu, SCS, BG1 NPC Project etc.). Only this last time I had played with Tutu and mods, which greatly improved the vanilla BG1 game. I'm going to start BG2 soon and of course, also with some good mods. I have finished it two times without any mods. Also, I never played Throne of Bhaal though, so my next BG2 game will definitely have it along with the mods.

So yes, these games have great re-play value and are definitely few of the best RPG's ever made for PC along with Planescape: Torment I mentioned earlier. It's definitely not the graphics like with todays RPGs but I still rather enjoy most of the hand drawn 2D backgrounds. And of course atleast for me the nostalgic feelings and memories these games arouses is something latest PC RPGs can never give.

I don't think there will be BG3, actually I hope there won't. Isn't the story of Bhaalspawn already well closed in Throne of Bhaal? Of course, there will certainly be more games which are set in the same world of Faerûn (like Neverwinter Nights etc.), but hopefully Baldur's Gate franchise is left out of them. It's already finished so there's no need to bring it up again. And atleast for me it would feel more like exploitation of the name rather than something that could live up to the stantard of these classics.

100% agree :D , yeah they should just leave it end and start at new era. The game would be more appreciated by the people and it shows youngster that high-end graphic doesnt matter when you got great game system, character and storyline :D

Wow... How the hell can you call Two Worlds good? One of the buggiest games ever, along with terrible voice acting and terrible graphics. It came no where near Oblivion. That and it's one of the lowest scored games in history (made a 1.5 or 2 in EGM and OXM. I'd have to say avoid this game at all costs... even if it was free...

BG3 was announced back in 2004... But we've not heard hide nor hair since then. They can do it without continuing the Bhaal line or they can remake the originals in a new engine.
I've heard additional rumors in published game mags over the past 2 years where it's been talked about. But with Black isle being defunct... I don't know if BG3 is one of Biowares as of yet announced titles or not.

    I hope for SOMETHING new...

wow  really? i thought it was fine because i havent encounter a bug yet, im not into deep in the game yet.. i dont read others review much lol... so what bug does it carry? please point out, really worried :( but the graphic is good.

Yeah, i also heard the announcement on BG3 and did a little dig awhile back in other forums on it. Majority of people in other forums wants the game to stay end while some want the game to be remake in a whole new 3d graphic such as the graphic of Neverwinter Nights, kinda interesting though... but im going with the starting something fresh and new adventure.

I would go for The Witcher (which I'm hooked on to these days!!). Great quest, great girls, sly and witty dialogue, plus a good AI.

Also, Oblivion, which was to me, like I'm on a ride. I sort of got really attached to my character and it was difficult to say goodbye to the game once I finished it. I'm definitely going to play it again once I get my pimped up desktop in June, with all settings high.

One game which hasnt been mentioned, is Sherlock Holmes. Good quests, nice voice acting, nice outlook of London town, plus smart missions which make a whole lotta sense.

They've mostly all be mentioned already but allow me to sum them up into a tidy little package for the uninitiated:

In no particular order (all true RPG's):

    1. The Witcher
    2. Oblivion
    3. Baldur's Gate series
    4. Neverwinter Nights series (get NWN2 Gold Edition)
    5. Planescape Torment
    6. Fallout series
    7. Icewind Dale series
    8. Diablo series (not really an RPG but I'll let it slide)
    9. Deus Ex (first one, not sequel!)
    10. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series

    Not really an RPG, but

Heroes of Might & Magic 2,3 with mods and maybe 5 with all the expansions are pretty good.

can't believe no one mentioned this as well..

It's not mentioned because it's NOT AN RPG in its vanilla unmodded version, those who like the fantasy setting should play the older Might and Magic Series.

Maybe if the thread subject was " Turn-based Fantasy Strategy Games" then it would have been mentioned. ;)

Woah.. lol, chill out man, i hear you.

Anyway for all baldur's gate fans, theres a mod that links up all the baldur's gate series into 1 game, like from BG1 to BG1:Tales of the sword coast to BG2 and finally to BG2 :throne of baal. I haven't read much into it yet, but will try it soon.

    Heres the link :
    http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG2/index_mods_large.php
Just scroll down all the way, its call "Baldur's Gate Trilogy"

I prefer Tutu over BGT, but that's just me. BGT has a bit different approach, but they both accomplish the same thing: implement the improvements from BG2 to BG1. Tutu is older so it should have a bit better compatibility with other mods. But BGT has now also been developed for quite a while so it has caught up with Tutu, so it should be compatible atleast with most Weidu mods.

Here is the list of Tutu compatible mods (or certain mod components) and their installation order: http://forums.gibberlings3.net/index.php?showtopic=8122
I would highly recommend installing atleast some of the components from BG2 Tweak Pack and some of the components from Sword Coast Strategems mod.

Chrono Trigger is a very very fun game
Oblivion is my current addiction very addicting and I love the freeness of the game (just takes some time getting used to)
Final Fantasy series is always good (7 is a must have)
    Paper Mario is grand
Super Mario RPG is also a good good game
It seems to me the old school games were all way better when it came to story line and settings
Nowadays its all about the graphics and extra little side games
Although they can be fun they die out pretty fast
Replay value has REALLY gone down in todays games
Unless its an online FPS its basically pointless to buy a game anymore
