I'm looking for a good RTS game. I was thinking of either Age Of Empires 3, The Settlers 7 or Civ 5?

I want a game where you start off with nothing, and have to cut down trees etc to build houses and then progress from there. I hate RTS games with really short levels. Is there a game that has one continuous level where you progress and advance to grow a huge empire starting from cutting down trees?

I don't know about Civ5, but the one Civ game I played (Call to Power) had you starting with a group of settlers and eventually building an empire.

Civilization is not an RTS, though.

Add sins of a solar empire to that, Ironclad managed to pull off a 4X RTS in real time. As you probably guessed, the game has a sci-fi setting instead of a traditional setting like civ5 and the settlers.
so instead of starting with cutting trees, you harvest asteroid :p.

While you have to manage all aspects of your empire, the game is a bit more combat oriented. You should be able to find a demo for the game somewhere. A game of Sins on a large maps will take you days to finish.

Civ5 is turned based, but it is still a strategy game.

Cheers for the info. I'm gonna check out Sins Of A Solar Empire, The Settlers 7, Total War and although it's not an RTS game, I was told to also check out EvE Online as well.

Ordering an M11X R1 on Fri for cheap from Amazon so can't wait to start playing these.

m11x is far from a good thing to play rts, since they are mostly more hard on the cpu.

    1. Total Annihilation (1999)
If you like classic RTS games, this is the king. It won game of year and has a spectacular soundtrack to go with it. Get the mods of course for more units.

    2. Command & Conquer 3 and Kane's Wrath Expansion
One of my favourite RTS games of all time. With the expansion, you get 3 factions with 3 subfactions each, totaling 9 choices. Game is quite balanced and the mod community has been very good (new units/maps).

    3. Command & Conquer 4
Single player lacks, but multiplayer/skirmish is incredibly fun. You can play up to 5v5 (unlike #3 where the limit is 4v4). Units, faction and sub-factions are all VERY balanced.

The great thing about this RTS game is that you can play your style. Between the two factions, GDI and NOD, you're offered three choices, such as "Offense", "Defence" or "Support". Offense is heavy ground units, Defence is turrets/infantry and Support is air.

C&C3 is indeed a nice RTS in the classic style, you might consider the missions to be too short though.

Since people seem to be getting into old games. Homeworld 1&2, the campaign features missions, but your fleet and upgrades are persistent so i would consider the campaign to be more like one mission. Homeworld also sports one hell of a soundtrack.

C&C4 lacks the core of what makes a C&C game as far as i'm concerned, sure the factions/units are there but the core gameplay was radically changed. It's not a bad game, i had fun playing it, EA tried to make some Dawn of War II style multiplayer if you ask me. If you aren't a fan of the series this won't bother you, but i know fans who were angry at EA for such a radical change. Oh and then there's that stupid DRM forcing you to play logged on the EA servers.

In the same vein that Company of Heroes, but with sci-fi is the Dawn of War series, although the Dawn of War II series is regarded more like an aRPG-RTS crossover.

I still do not understand what type of RTS you want.

    Total War style?

Or Company Of Heroes? (Best RTS I have on Steam :D :D :D)

Or Empire Earth? (Like Civ5 and SOASR)

The best RTS games i played are Age of Mythology, C&C Red Alert 2 + Yuri's Revenge, C&C Generals + Zero Hour, C&C 3 + Kane's Wrath, Rise of Legends, Warcraft 3 + Frozen Throne, Empire Earth 1, Starcraft 1 and Starcraft 2.
Red Alert 3 is cool too. :D

These are no RTS games but still very good - especially MOO2. I've played it a lot recently.

Indeed! Some months ago I played the Tiberian Dawn campaigns again. Unfortunately Red Alert doesn't work properly in DOSBox and I don't like wine.

    I really miss these.

However, my favourite RTS game is Warzone 2100.

Supreme Commander will fulfill any RTS role if you can grasp the complexity.

Tiberian Sun is also Free to Play now. Just need to google it.

I think M$ should port Halo Wars from the Xbox360 to the PC.

I think HW has a great potential to become a great RTS. Minus the HUGE balancing issues. I like it because it's very...lite, isn't confusing as dazzles and it is start forward like paper scissors rock.

But hey, it's M$; they always go into the wrong direction.

Tiberian sun is a nice game, i had a great time with it a while back, those crazy NOD always make me laugh. Red Alert 2 is even more fun though. Nonsensical story but fun :D. I think i still have the game's CDs stacked somewhere, does the version available for download contain the firestorm expansion?

Rise of Nations is a bit old, but it is an RTS and very similar to the Civilization series. In fact, the lead designer, Brian Reynolds, was the lead designer of Civilization 2. There is no story based campaign (there is a campaign, but the "levels" aren't necessarily linked by an overarching story). I think you would like it.

Other than that (and AoE series which you mentioned), the Empire Earth series is the only other set that, I think, fits your request. Empire Earth 2 was the high watermark there.

None of the Command and Conquer or Starcraft/Warcraft RTS's should be recommended for the original poster. He wants something with a long, slow build from nothing to grand civilizations, and the Westwood and Blizzard offerings just aren't that. They're the very sort of fast-paced, cut-to-the-chase RTS'es that he doesn't want.

The Age of Empires series immediately seemed like a perfect fit. I mean, to start chopping wood and gathering berries, and end with giant castles and universities, heavy cavalry, trebuchets, fleets of warships, etc. Teching up is a long, detailed process, not a matter of building two buildings and buying an upgrade.

if you want a building, grand strategy type rts try sins of a solar empire(scifi themed).

its the best strategic rts around imho.

if you want something that focuses more on the startegy aspect then you can try europa universalis (15th to 19th century historical), but it is quite complex. very rewarding though, once you figure it out.

OP: If you're willing to give Turn-Based RTS a shot (which I adore), consider giving the "Heroes of Might & Magic" series a try.

The best ones in order are #3, #6 and #4.

#3/#4 are 2D classics and #6 is currently in BETA (you can get into BETA by simply pre-ordering).

Feel free to watch Youtube videos of them.

It can take days to beat just 1 XL map, or several hours to beat a small map. Time consuming, but very fun! :) It requires the player to use intellect and good strategy to over-come opponents.

Yeah, sins is one hell of a game and your strategic options are rather diversified as are the three factions.
