    I was wondering what are the video card you can expect in a 14.1" laptop ? I was looking a the Compal HGL30 but the res is only 1280x800. Can i get the same video card with a better resolution on another brand ? Keep in mind i got a 1200-1300$ CND budget !

    Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the Geforce 7700 Go and slightly less powerful ATI x1700 are the best video cards you can get in a 14" form factor, mainly because the power/heat requirements of the fastest high end-cards wouldn't work in anything smaller than 15-17". Two examples being the Asus A8JS (7700) and A8JP (x1700).

    You're not too far off in terms of the Compal HGL30, a 7600 Go is pretty comparable. I don't think you can do much better in your price range, it's a good choice for your budget imo.

    As for resolution, the abovementioned ASUS models come with native 1440x900 panels, but they do cost more (1300-1500 USD).

    The most powerful cards in 14" laptops can be found in this order from most powerful to slightly less powerful:

    Geforce 7700 > Radeon X1700 <=> Geforce 7600 <=> Radeon X1600

    That doesn't mean the X1600 or Geforce 7600 aren't good cards at all. There's only a very small performance difference between the 7600 and the 7700, and only a very select number of notebooks even have the Go 7700.

    It's the other way around, the 7700 is better than the x1700 by a small margin. The HGL30's perfectly fine, the 7700, 7600, x1700 and x1600 are all the same class of video cards, although you can see a difference in their benchmarks, in reality they're very similar.
