Dead Space & Dead Space 2 (technically 3rd person but same idea)

Amnesia (Not a shooter, but first person and very creepy)

Metro 2033 wasn't bad. Worth checking out anyways, particularly when you can pick it up for about 5 dollars.

    Minecraft. lul.

RE5 got good reviews from what I heard, dunno how scary it is though.

Doom 3 is always fun :p.

Playing dead-island co-op with my gf now. Some parts are creepy, but nothing over the top crap your pants or anything.

    This.

I'm still playing it and I'm loving it. Although, I'm pretty hesitant right now at this certain level.

Another vote for Metro 2033, it isn't scary the whole game, but God the game's good. Another one is Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason. Love both game so much.

Amnesia and Penumbra were scary from YouTube videos, too scary for me to play. My cousin said the Penumbra is more of a puzzle scary kind of game.

Another Metro 2033 here, just make sure to turn off all the console hand holding and play in Ranger mode for a real PC game. Also Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason (You just missed a sale on this one), one of my favorite games. Also add S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky and Cal of Pripyat, all three have some creepy parts, and the A-life AI will keep you on your toes, get the Complete Mods for the best experience.

    Here's a taste:

    Metro 2033
    width='640' height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/OvyV2mNhDfU?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/OvyV2mNhDfU?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width='640' height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

    Cryostasis Sleep of Reason:

    S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

A funny one in Clear Sky:

Metro 2033 didnt seem creepy one bit to me at any point in time, it was just a falloutish shooter that has horrible performance programing.

As for Dead Space the view is not a big deal, it adds to the games element and you get used to it after about 30 minutes of play.

Yeah, the 3rd person rule is invalid for Deadspace, i can garantee you, playing in the dark, on a big monitor, with decent audio system setup. YOU WILL BE SCARED!

Get 1 and 2, and i can promise you won't regret it! (I didnt get scared at fear, but DS had a mix of scare and jump that got me ;) )

I have two recommendation to add for creepy FPSs:
    - Bioshock (at least the frist couple of hours the environment was really overwhelmingly creepy).
    - Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason. It is quite an unknown game, well regarded for stressing all kind of GPU with their high quality options. And it is quite creepy (and tough at times) with an interesting story being told as you advance.

Besides those two I also recommend Amnesia and its predecesors: the Penumbra series (Overture and Black Plague, Requiem is not worth).

If you get STALKER, make sure you turn off head bobs and camera bobs. I've never had a problem before [gaming on PC for over 10 years; mainly FPS], but STALKER made me feel barfy.

Oh, and my vote is for Amnesia.

Dead Space 1 and 2, I loved them both!

While I was playing those, my wife was sitting next to me on the couch playing her sims game and the whole time she's watching the tv and muttering 'don't like it' lol. They have really good creepy atmosphere and story line to push you along. Good scary fun.

I highly recommend surround sound and playing in a dark room. :)

These should be given that you already played them, but if not they are must play games.

Half Life & Half Life 2.

They are not horror movie creepy but they are creepy in there own way and definitely a staple in the PC FPS genre/history.

Metro 2033 and STALKER series are excellent, eery games.

Also, I'm not sure how old it is but Clive Barkers: Undying was scary as hell.

I've played Dead Space, this may sound rude, but how is this scary? I mean i love it, it's kick- and a great game, but far from scary no? It's more like Resident Evil from the feel? Am I the only one?
Same for Bioshock, it's awesome but not scary.

Yeah not shock horror, but half-life 2 has ravenholm, plus the generally dystopian City 17 (IMO one of the best settings in a video game ever).

And they are two of the greatest FPS's ever made... so if you haven't played them...

Personally Bioshock was scary the first couple of hours (I was going very slow), and the scare in Dead Space lasted about 3 levels (3-4 hours?). After that they are not scary anymore, nevertheless it is a good scare. i mean, compared to the FEAR games I am sure both of them are far more scary...

Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth

The game barely makes your post-2005 criteria, but it does. And the best (scariest) part of the game is before it becomes a shooter...the FP of FPS is there the whole time...the S comes later...

If you like horror, and prefer the first person viewpoint, I recommend it...(I run it on XP...not sure if it plays well with Vista or 7)...

My second (and only other) choice has already been mentioned...Cryostasis...

If release date doesn't matter as much, and you can get it working, System Shock 2 was genuinely creepy...but then I've always loathed monkeys...stupid, poo-flinging creatures...I hate them even more after Rise of the Planet of the Apes...

Im strange in that I like Doom 64 and the old doom games way more than Doom 3 despite how much more advanced it is in graphics and sound.

I never could beat doom 3 before I lost interest for some reason.

Completely nailed it! My God! I needed 3 attempts to even START the level. Was crapping massive amounts to every hiss and windcrack. Afterwards, it was pure senile fun! :D

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is also one on my top list.

As to Bioshock... I was more captivated by the massive amount of Art Deco in the game. Fighting and looting were "in between moments" that almost annoyed me at times when interrupted from gazing and watching into every corner for every detail. I didn't have time to get scared, really. :D
