I found a Toshiba Satellite A300 for sale locally, brand new for $600.00 CAD. This seems like a pretty decent price for the specs, I'm just wondering if it could play games(mainly Valve games:TF2,L4D, etc.) at mid/high settling with a smooth frame rate.

Here is a list of the specs:
    Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
    T5750 @ 2.00 GHz
    ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470
    Memory 3 GB DDR2
    Vista Home Premium 64-bit

So basically, I'm wondering if I should pick this thing up ASAP, or wait for something better to come along.

The processor seems good. the HD 3470 is a rather weak card . Yet i think it should handle TF2, L4D just fine.

    HD3470 = 8400M GS pretty much

I think for the price its fine maybe do some more searching and you could get a better deal

I would not calll that a gaming laptop, the cheapest high end gaming laptop is probably the Asus W90-X1 for $2199 on newegg.com

Though I would recomend you spend the $200 more for the W90-A1 from a Asus dealer it gets you a blueray drvie, a 2nd HDD, and a Q9000 cpu.

If your on a small budget that means getting the most your money can.

I think the best place to do that is going to be on a used last generation machiine, ebay or these forums.

An example I just sold my G50V-A1 for $1200 and it was in brand new +++ condition. with bag & cooler & mx518 mouse included.

You can nab an Asus G50 with 9800m gs for $899 US at Best Buy if you don't mind the thunderbolts

I don't think so i would actually say the 8400gt is more comparable to the 3470 ive seen some amazing scores on the 3470 on this site and those were stock too.

I would say the MSI ex625 ( http://www.msimobile.com/level3_productpage.aspx?cid=9&id=98) @ about $800 is one of the best budget gaming laptops at the moment. P7350 processor (only weak part, but since it's MSI, you can OC with a push of a button without any worries), 4GB ram, and, most importantly, an ATI 4670 gpu (w/ ddr3 ram). Far better than a 3470, 3650, or even a 9600m gt. Somewhat below the 9800m gs, yes, but it comes in a less pricey, less ugly (in my opinion!), and more portable machine.

That one seems like a winner to me. It's a little more, but I'm sure that it's a lot more powerful. Do you think that the MSI could play Fallout 3? I've been wanting to try it out for some time now :)

That MSI is definitely a good deal. Much more attractive than the X5 and its lightning bolts as well.

Um the MSI with a 9600 is no competition for the $100 more expensive G50VT with a 9800m GS though...

Honestly the G50VT case design is OK... turn off the lights and no one cares about the decorations.
    (granted I have the X1)

For the massive improvement in performance, get the 9800m GS-equipped G50vt, if $100 is more important get the amd-CPU/9600m equipped MSI.
