I know tht it says free roaming games on the title but if you know any good RTS games tht are out right now, feel free to post it. Currently playing SC and BattleForge.

http://wz2100.net/ Warzone 2100, was made for the PS then PC years ago and is now maintained as freeware, you won't find a RTS like it and it blows most of todays RTS games away..

Free roaming wise, fallout 3 + oblivion can't get much more free roaming...

I'm pretty sure you can turn the gore down, lol. And don't pick the bloody mess skill (I love that skill).

Mount and Blade, should max on your system, 100% sandbox.

Dwarf Fortress, complete sandbox rts game. You can do anything in this, and it's free. You might be deterred by the graphics, but it's a great game.

psh fallout 3 is way more gorier. SC might be gory but the units are really small and they all die the same way. But fallout 3 is in first person view :( and you can choose to blow up its legs, heads, etc.

And i already play Mount&Blade. Amazing game :D I thought about getting x3 terran conflict but i heard that it was really demanding.

X3 is, never mind the fact the learning curve is so steep it looks like a brick wall lol. Freelancer is much more pick up and play, darkstar one also though its a pain to get working in vista.

Whats wrong with gore anyway? you not screamish are ya lol.

Time wise or computer wise? Both should be able to run it. I have a friend with a garbage laptop that can play it on low. However, I heard it takes a ton of time to learn to play.

I've seen plenty of gore nuking Zerg colonies on defense maps. I think the miconception here is that the units are indeed smaller and less detailed compared to the decade recent Fallout 3.

Theirs errors with certain DLLs that load on startup, tages protection sometimes causes issues. It just generally doesn't like vista, thats not to say i didn't get it working and finish it though lol.

As for maxing out X3, dout it you should get away with medium settings though at that res.

Really can't see you having a problem with dual 9800m, i played it on my HDX at 1650X1080 with the settings quite high and it dipped in a few places but was perfectly playable otherwise. It really does have a hell of a learning curve though, think EVE online, i really didn't have the time to put into it last time i had it installed and after being blown up multiple times by the first bad guys i found i sort of gave in lol. That was X-3 Reunion, i heard they reworked the interface in terran conflict to make it a bit more user friendly.

At the moment im hoping to god they don't screw up jumpgate evolution as its looking quite good so far http://www.jumpgateevolution.com/?territory=EnglishUK

I never got the change to play EVE unfortunately. I played WoW for so long, and I never heard of EVE until I got deployed, and now I'm interested in Aion and FFXIV.

Any games with a linear storyline are just too easy for me anymore. I beat Freespace2 and a couple mods in a week. Beat Prototype in 4 playing sessions, the Witcher took a little longer, probably 2-3 weeks.

Know what you mean, the only single player games that have kept me entertained lately is revisiting mass effect, fallout 3 and oblivion mainly because of the many side quests & a goldern oldie of homeworld cataylsm, has the best plot of the 3 homeworlds and no other space RTS even comes close to it in my eyes.

Anyway i digress and i feel we are pulling the ops topic off track lol.

    So : RTS

Ground Control, not a true RTS in a sense but bloody good fun regardless, should run maxed out on both ya laptop and desktop. http://www.fileplanet.com/156136/150000/fileinfo/Ground-Control-(Free-Game) don't know if they still offer the CD keys but used to.

Savage 2 : Mutliplayer online but lets you play commander as a RTS or FPS as a standard foot solider, again free http://savage2.com/en/main.php should run on medium to high settings nicely.

Spring: Basically designed to bring total annilation back from the dead, (considered by many the best RTS game ever) and has now diverged into a moddable engine http://springrts.com/

Mechcommander 2: Solid game made my microsoft based on the battletech universe, microsoft released the source code a while back which basically includes the full game, will run maxed out no problem http://gamestand.net/Downloads/details/id=3.html

Their are a few other free ones that escape me at this time, but ill post them up if i recall them lol.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It doesn't get much more free-roaming than that. It'll keep you busy for quite a while, especially if you get the expansion packs.

It may not run maxed out on that laptop, but honestly, it's such a good game, it'll be worth it anyway.

IMO Oblivion was VERY underwhelming and it only shined when you add Oscoros Overhaul. That dude fixed most of the gaping flaws in the game like enemy level scaling. I pre-ordered Oblivion and was so stoked for it, but stopped playing it about half way through because it was so easy and dumbed down for the console it just didn't feel like a real computer game.

I would probably skip Oblivion. Gothic 3 had MAJOR bugs, but with the community patches its awesome now and a much better game than Oblivion.

I also give +1 to the STALKER series.

I highly recommend STALKER as well, +1 (but only SOC, and not ClearSky which is crap) especially if you play through the first time with the community expansion mod(s) installed. The atmosphere in the game is astoundingly surreal and absorbing.

Freelancer is a bit aged, and Msoft has taken down the serverlisting, but it's still a great game. If you're into that, and have the time & money, EVE cannot be surpassed in that genre.

As a Savage fan, I felt incumbent to give Savage2 a try, and as much as I'd love to plug it, it's not for everyone. There are a lot of game intrinsics that you need to pick up not overly welcoming to the new-comer. I enjoyed it for a while, but I thought I should issue that disclaimer.

Freelancer still has a very large online gaming community that is now run by the community, many mods are still also played online.

24/7 Discovery is the most used server if memory serves with 150 peeps online at any one time.

    http://eoa.seriouszone.com/play.php for more info.

Used to own warzone on the PS1 and it was a fab game then, way way way ahead of its time, the time limits the fact you was forced to defend two locations at a time, then you get into the second area and all your units are seriously underpowered lol.

Two completely different games, Homeworld is a space RTS and requires tactical management of a fleet, including workers collecting ore, keeping your mothership alive, building ships etc. Im currently playing through catacylsm again as i love the gameplay and story..., the closest modern day equilvlent that springs to mind would be sins of a solar empire though its got no single player campaign and is 2d gameplay.

X3 is one man in a space ship affair, you control the one ship and complete missions etc, though you can manage space stations etc later in the game thats more micromanagement then anything, as mentioned before the learning curve is a brick wall, expect to die a lot..

Yep, think it works out as about £12-15 a month, though their is a ingame item called plex that gives you 30 days play time, problem is playing on a free account many things are crippled so you stand no chance of getting the money required to buy before the trial expires.

    Homeworld 2 demo : http://www.gamershell.com/download_3274.shtml only a small download.

Sins of a solar empire demo : http://www.gamershell.com/news_46837.html

Has anyone mentioned Mass Effect? It's free roaming to an extent, and a truly awesome game.
