I just want the input device, no headphones... and it pretty much needs to be usb- I don't want to deal with charging / batteries.

I guess it could also be a line in device, but apparently the line in on the macbook pro isn't an amplified line in, so I don't know if that matters / if I can use a normal line in mic, but if I can I may actually prefer that.

    edit:

mod move this to the proper forum if it isn't there already?

random question, somewhat related: would you be able to have voice come over the headset only, and have the rest of the sounds (from your game) play over your computer speakers/setup?

Depends on the application you're using. Like with TeamSpeak, you can specify which audio device you want to use for input and output.

I'm interested in something similar as well, ear mounted headpiece, preferably USB, but not necessary since I have a USB sound card in addition to my X-Fi that will accept 1/8" jacks.

Not exactly over-the-ear, but very good none the less.

These are what I have been using the past 6 months.

Good comfort, good sound quality, very good mic quality, USB, has a small button on the chord that mutes/un-mutes the mic, aswell as changes the volume up and down.

If I where to rate it, I would rate 4/5 Stars. It's pretty good.

Even though Amazon is overpriced, I picked mine up from Walmart for about $35.

Thanks, but I guess the point is using a mic WITHOUT headphones.

    I did just a mod today :D

    I use this: http://www.xoxide.com/zmmic1.html

It can clip to your headphone cable or your cloths or you can just sit it down somewhere.

It works just hanging on my cord but it works best if you can talk into it so I took a coat hanger and attached it to some velcro and made my own boom for it that can be attached/removed from the headphones :D

next is to make another custom boom that attaches to my desk for when I am not wearing the headphones.

    Really quite versatile.

I used to use a mic like the one posted above that goes over the ear, but problem is its not just a mic its also an earphone, so to wear it you had to have that ear piece in and it was uncomfortable to me and obviously made wearing my headphones impossible, or if i wanted to use my speakers I blocked half the sound by having one ear with a speaker in it.

The Zalman mic was the ultimate solution for me.

I may experiment with some higher end clip on mics down the road like the ones a broadcaster would wear on TV. I can probably substitute it for the Zalman easy but it will pick up more background noise.

Or you just get an over-the-ear head set and don't plug in the headphone part to the computer. There are 2 plugs for it unless it's a USB headset, in which case 1 red and 1 green wire. I often have my mic plugged in on my headset and use my speakers.

That is what I did but you still have the speaker clogging up your hearing for that ear.

I put the headset around my neck and bring the mic up to my mouth.

Interesting that there really isn't a product out there which is just the over-the-ear mic. Do most people here use a mic built-in to a headset or a stand-alone mic which sets on your desk?

headphones with mic. I can't do that anymore because I have my two babies that I have to listen for at night and with headphones I very likely won't hear them, so need to use speakers. An over the ear mic would be percect.

Um... I think so there has always just been a mic slot and headphone slot for everything, so unless Mac has some sort of proprietary tech that I do not know of it will work.

Have you tried any other kind of mic on there? Its not like they need a lot of power like headphones, just enough to get/send signal.
