Freelancer! Less complicated than the X games, lots of combat and buying stuff, great story line too. Although it is quite old lol.

I concur with Freelancer. Also try DarkStar One and a couple freeware ones - Freespace 2 Open and the Battlestar Galactica mod Beyond the Red Line.

Freelancer is nice, but very lightweight in the "sim" category. It's more like a complex shoot em up than a space sim. The storyline is very linear that you have to follow if you want more areas of the game to open for you.
It's still a fun game, just don't expect anything as deep as X3.

I haven't tried it myself and I doubt it's graphically what you want, but there's an open source remake of Privateer called Privateer Gemini Gold that you can check out.

Call me crazy, but I've been enjoying Darkstar One. YOu can pick it up at most Wal-Marts or Targets for 10 bucks.

Free Lancer was very sweet though I never get to finish it. Darkstar One was sweet too, but I think I only played the demo. The best one I have ever played was Earth and Beyond made by Westwood, though they closed the servers because they couldn't get paid enough.

Now thinking about the new ones, maybe try Star Trek when it is out, it should be good.

Like a lot of people said already, Freelancer is an excellent game, although you won't get much in terms of simulation. It's more about exploring and action, but it does that amazingly well. Plus there are a ton of mods that make the game even more fun. The story is a bit thin, but it only serves to guide the player through the different star systems anyway.
