Hi, I am currently using fraps to record playing video games, the quality is really good but it lags my computer horribly. For example, mass effect max settings i get 55-60fps, with fraps recording to drops to 20 or even 10. Is there any video recorder that doesn't lag ones system up as badly as fraps but keeps the quality at the same level?

Fraps is pretty much the best, I have tried them all.

the rest bog you down just as much and dont have as many options/features.

There are things you can do to help your computer.

First record at a lower resolution, second record at a lower frame rate, third record to a 2nd hard drive that is not running your game or operating system, forth overclock your cpu or get a better one :D

If you dont have enough power to pull it off you can look into other options....

Record with a camcorder... (I hate this option unless your recording something that you need to be in the picture, sucks for gameplay vids)

Oh and 5th, fraps uses its own codec to compress the video, its not compressed very mutch but if you set it to record uncompressed it will not take as much cpu power so that can help too but you will have VERY large file size so make sure you have a 2nd hdd to do this with as you dont want that much data saving to the drive your game needs to run from.

Ok, thanks for the help. Just wondering, by lower resolution do you mean half-size vs. full-size? Also, I don't see an option to record uncompressed, where is it located?

What do the check boxes no cursor or no sync do?

    thanks

yeah like half size, or if I recall you can set a custom resolution as well.

the codec is buried in the advanced options somewhere, I had to mess with it because I had a big of lag in some recording and my video editor didnt like the fraps codec.

no cursor is just that, it would hide your cursor if you were say on your desktop, syc lets the video and audio go at there own speed you dont want to do that.

Hmm, I am not seeing any option to change the codec : /

People say Fraps is really good but if it's making the game laggy you should try something else. Just Google for a video recorder and you will find a bunch of stuff. I almost never use a screen recorder so I can't give you some recommendations. When I'm doing some editing tutorials I use my camcorder and the quality is actually pretty good. Maybe you could try it out?
