1. The sticker on the laptop says 9800 gs, dxdiag says 9800 gt. Is Dxdiag right and the sticker wrong?
2. Whats the difference between a 9800 gs and a 9800gt? which has better performance?
3. This laptop effin rocks! I highly recommend to anyone looking for a gaming laptop that has outstanding build quality and is gorgeous!
4. If anyone has any questions for me about this laptop post here and ill do my best to answer, will be installing games soon and ill post back on the benchmarks.
Got some benchmarks in
8528 3DMark06, is that a good score for the specs?
Just ran again with turbo extreme and got 8951
Guild Wars : Everything high, the game locks at 60fps
Left for Dead: Everything High, 2x AF, 4x AA, FPS locked at 60 too
Team Fortress 2: Everything High, gets fps in the 60-80's
CSS: Everything high, Avg is 199 fps
Stalker: SoC: Everything High fps 40+ (very unoptimized game)
Thats it for now, will be updating when i play CoD 4 and WaW.

You may also like to ntune, rivatuner or GPU-Z to see what they think your graphics card is. Do note that a 9800GT is stronger than a 9800GS. The performance difference will be noticeable but not major. AND I would recommend you go to nvidia.com and get some new drivers for that nice graphics card.
-
the sticker is right
-
The 9800 GS is an underclocked 9800 GT so it will be read as a 9800 GT but it is a 9800 GS
-
9800 GS is an underclocked 9800 GTS. GPU-Z will read the name as '9800M GT', but will recognize the correct number of shaders (64), and the correct clocks.
-
fudge, updated drivers from the nvidia site and now it "correctly" says 9800 gs
oh well, its still an awesome card!

nice, one question, does anyone know why left 4 dead keeps crashing? right after the intro movie, it crashes and says l4d.exe has stopped working, and it been doing the same thing before i updated the drivers, and after i updated em.
I have Vista Home Premimum 64bit in case ur wondering -

What driver are you currently using?
Is everything else up-to-date? -
Alrite, reinstalled left for dead and team fortress 2 and now they both run without a hitch, i am using the latest nvidia drivers from their site, the beta notebook ones, cant go on nvidia monitor without getting a BSOD.

dont be disappointed! the 98GS is still very good
-
The performance difference between both is not really significant for the price you paid, especially if you got the X1 at .Bestbuy for $1250.
-
That's strange... I figured the 9800gs is about the same as the 8800gts, no? I'm getting constantly over 60 fps on STALKER, though I admittedly haven't went very far in it (hard to beat shooters with a touchpad
). I'm using maximum textures and visibility, though I admittedly haven't touched the AA options. Are you sure you didn't have anything else taking up RAM or CPU while running it?
EDIT: are you using the full dynamic lighting? I get 80-120 FPS without it and about 30 with it... I see virtually no difference between the image quality so if I were you I would use at least just dynamic object lighting. Full dynamic is a useless FPS killer IMO. -
And i am very satisfied with this laptop, and to think i was gonna get a laptop with a 4500gma.....what was i thinking lol -
-
Ran 3dmark06 and got 8528, is that good for the specs and price?
-
very good for the price
-
Just ran again with turbo extreme and got 8951, which i have to say, this is the best laptop ive ever purchased! (and its only me 2nd one ever purchased lol)
-
ooo cant wait tell christmas when I boot up that g50vt-a1
PLAY SOME BF2
whats difference between a1 and x1?? -
x is higher then a, therefore more performance
And i cant get CoD4 to run, keeps saying not compatible with this version of windows, im assuming its because its 64bit? if so, how can i get it to run? -
hmmm?
lets not jump to conclusions mine has same graphics card as yours..
whats your ghz proccesor?
2.26?
mines 2.53
...owned...
EDIT: awfully quiet aren't we lol -
actually A is top of the line i belive..x is the lowly counterpart..either way..pretty much the same thing except for a few specs but gaming performance is the same....
about you cod4 problem...thats weird, mine installed no problem... maybe reinstall or search the forums at callofduty.com for game specific help? -
and i was just joking around...owned? are we 12 yrs old? The only thing thats better about yours is higher clocked cpu, and ive already met that with turbo performance, and you have a smaller screen, higher res which doesnt bother me at all, and ive saved 600+ dollars for that little sacrifice...
-
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
Yes, on the internet, we're all 12 yrs old!
PWNED ()\/\//\/E|) OWNED, PRAWNED pwnt p02ned -
Anyways, World at War installed without a hitch, everything maxed except AA and AF getting 50fps+
Since WaW is the same engine as CoD4, shouldnt CoD4 run too? im gonna uninstall it and reinstall -
well good luck keeping your computer overclocked with the turbo button(even overclocked it's stills not as good as when mine runs normally). Let's see how long your computer can run like that. Overclocking wears the computer down much faster and heats the temp up a lot more. I could overclock mine if I choose. So basically your attempt to shun me has failed. I must admit you may have gotten a better bang for your buck deal but mine was still well priced and is still better. Also your screen is exactly the same size as mine 15.4 inches.
-
Actually its 15.6, mines a 16:9 widescreen, and yours is a 15.4 16:10 which isnt as wide as mine, and mine only needs to last for 6 months, and i was just playing oblivion for a couple hours everything maxed, and turbo extreme on, and my laptop didnt even get warm, so im willing to bet its gonna last a VERY long time. Where have i tried to shun you? I was joking my first post, and you felt compelled to defend yourself, acting like a very immature kid, and ive just shown you that you couldve saved 600$, for some minor technicalities, like 300mhz diff, and a higher res screen...i really dont see how yours is much better...i can even upgrade my cpu and still save a couple hundred. So once again, i have not tried to belittle, or shun you...if you can prove me wrong, go ahead.
-
from one test you conclude that your laptop is going to last for a very long time. If you just got the laptop then of course its going to preform top notch. and if you only need it to last 6 months then i guess your set, but your saying that you saved money and I spent extra. Why would you only want a laptop like the x1 if your only planning to use it for half of a year? that seems like a waist of money to me.
the first thing you said was "x is higher then a, therefore more performance"
now i took this as an immature remark from a teenager who has no way to back up his reasoning that x is better then a.
The stupidity of that remark now that im looking at it actually makes me lol. Its like something a little kid would say.
You also keep saying you saved money. NOBODY CARES. I spent more mines better. i can also upgrade mine.
you only saved 300 dollars. -
...Why are you guys arguing about whose laptop is better? They're virtually the same minus the better screen on the A series. By the way, the X1 does have a 15.6" screen, the Best Buy specification is a typo.
-
i know it does and im sry for not looking more closely
the a1 has better processor too -
-
-
-
hmmm i get what your saying
we have the same laptop build
but mines just more upgraded and has better screen -
-
I still would like to know why he would buy a laptop like that and only use it for 6 months.
-
Just joking. -
Rofl I would buy the most expensive computer I could find
-
Just so you aren't disappointed, the difference between a 2.26 and a 2.5GHz processor paired with a 9800m GS is very minimal. This isn't to say it isn't better, but not by a whole lot. In most games even the 2.26 at stock will be more than enough to feed the 9800m GS.
Basicaly what people are trying to tell you is that your big tirade here about having a "better" computer is true in the sense that it is better... but by a nose-hair.
You paid more for a nicer screen... which is more than reasonable. However, his point that he got nearly all the performance you did for a lesser price is also quite true.
Also, the point that OC wears on your processor faster is true, but not in any practical sense of the word. ASUS provides the tool knowing that the CPU does just fine at its whole 2 degrees C warmer when OC'd. 5 or 6 years down the road, even if he always turns it up to 2.5GHz, he will still be doing fine more than likely. Even 10 years down the road, it probably won't be the GPU or CPU that fails if he only uses the ASUS utility to OC.
(The power coupling almost always goes first...) -
so using the turbo button to OC wont make your computer less powerful after a while of using it?
also i think his only has one hard drive
mine has 2 hard drives -
No, using the turbo mode just runs it at higher clocks... which ASUS has likely tested.
Running it at higher clocks DOES produce higher heat output which does cause higher wear on the processor. (note that even using the processor normally causes the same wear, just less due to lesser heat)
There is no loss of ability in OC'ing. (until late stages of processor wear) The only downside is the additional wear you placed on the processor which you probably will not notice in the processor's useful lifecycle. (Ask yourself how much you will be using this processor 15 years from now...)
Once again, with the minor OC the turbo mode program brings, it isn't really that big of a deal (its only a 10% OC and a whopping 2 degrees C) The wear you place on it is not much more than normal. -
ok ill just use it when im playing games.
im going to be using this laptop for 2-3 years so do you think the processor will break before then? -
-
ok sweet if it does i got 2 year warrenty
-
Unless there are other issues, the processor will likely last 10+ years if you take care of it even overclocked.
Note there WILL be additional heat, so keep the vents clean of dust and free of obstruction, monitor heat, and don't hesitate to clock down if you start seeing issues. (crashes, program glitches, etc.)
Always remember, treat overclocking as a bonus and don't take it for granted.
Honestly, those the OC usually treat their laptop better in every other way than those who do not. -
k ill like clean it out every 6 months or so
-
The reason why i only need it to last 6 months is just because in 6 months ill be fully in the army and getting paid and ill be able to afford a better laptop, but ill most likely keep it till it cant run the latest games with good performance.
And i just had to add, it plays effin oblivion, everything high, at 60fps(which its locked to, cuz of vsync). And Oblivion is one of my favorite games EVAR! I couldnt play it before cuz my x200m sucked at oblivion REAL bad. im talking 6fps with everything low... -
hmmm i had oblivion on xbox 360 and beat it it was awsome
so i bought fallout 3 for the computer hopefully its just as awsome
now I set my sights on l4d -
see im more the type to "drive it like I stloed it" so I oc that little EVERYTIME i boot up... why, because i game a lot lol..
Got the new Asus G50 from best buy, questions!
