Anyone play this yet? I really, really tried to play it over the last week or so on my notebook because it seemed to have some great potential but I finally gave up.

1st - To get the performance to where it felt playable to me, I had to really crank down the settings more than I feel should be necissary. It's more demanding on my machine than Oblivion. Seems very unoptimized. Wish every game engine had the resource efficiency of the Source engine. My notebook is no powerhouse, but I think it should run most anything out right now at medium settings, especially at the low res I was running it at (1024x768). My notebook listed in my signature.

2nd - At high graphics settings, the game is absolutely gorgeous, but as you crank the settings down, it becomes downright ugly. There's no good middle-ground.

3rd - I found I could get 20-30 fps on medium-medium/high settings at 1024x768, but it still felt really sluggish and sloppy as opposed to Oblivion which feels quite smooth at 25-30 fps.

4th - The countless bugs and glitches in the game made it frustrating to the point of uninstall. A multitude of video problems, but the one that finally did me in was if you turn off HDR and "Glow" (fake HDR) to save some frames.. you get a flickering white bar across your screen when you look up or down or at a mountain. There are many others, some of which I'm sure will be addressed with patches, but who wants to buy a game and then wait a couple weeks for it to be relatively free of bugs?

Anyhow, I stuck with the game for almost a week because, like I said before, it seemed to have great potential in story and fun gameplay. It has a very diverse world with interesting and varied landscapes and locations. Too bad they didn't spend a little more time in development and release a more "finished" product.

More demanding than Oblivion? thats scary. I do want to try it though.
I never got into the other Gothic games (mainly because I didn't like the control schemes) but the new one looks pretty.

I wonder how long it'll be before patch time! And I still have to see how Oblivion runs on my MBP compared to my desktop, which is a AMD 64 3000+ with a gig of ram and an x800xt.

Not bad. The demo runs at 20+ fps at 1280x800 on a 7900GS (although it freezes completely for 1-2 seconds periodically, probably while loading). The game has a very World of Warcraft feel to it. There's some pretty interesting stuff graphically - they've done lighting and shadows very well, and the depth of field thing is pretty cool - but there's some really unfinished parts, too - most of the textures aren't very well done and the character animations are lame, a la WoW. The combat system is a little numb, as well.
