I just got my new zalman cooler today and couldn't be happier with the results. Most games I've played max out at around 75 now, and no fans even come on. Before I was getting 87 max, with heavy fans.
I achieved these temps with the cooler AND removing the bottom panel.
I know that high temps kill computer components, and I also know that computers like stable environments. Some chips, like the 84m nvidia, suffered from the heatup and cooldown of playing games which eventually led to solder cracking, rendering the gpu useless.
What I'm wondering is if I should turn off the cooler fan while not gaming. That way the min and max temps have less of a gap, but it will operate at higher temps more often.
For example:
Fan on all the time: 44c while browsing, 75c while gaming
Fan on while gaming: 55c while browsing, 75c while gaming
I hope this makes sense, basically is lower temps or temp stability healthier for the components, specifically the gpu?
thanks!

i think you should shut off your cooler while not gaming. 55C is good idle temperature...
PS.
you got to clean your components like other day since you leave backpanel open.... -
Also, it might be worthwhile cleaning out the fans, heatsink fins and replacing the thermal paste, as taking the bottom panel off means much more dirt and dust can get into the notebook, possibly causing damage.
I keep my NC2000 on low pretty much all the time, and only kick it up to the highest when playing games. -
Yeah, well I only take it off while gaming, but I do game alot. I'll be sure to take extra care with dust as such.

why not do a copper mod and keep the back pannel on... temps will be slightly higher but still below 80C hopefully... many ppl on the ASUS forum can help u with that...

I'll be doing a copper mod as well =p
I might get an extra back panel and drill some holes, but they're out of stock right now.
