    Need for Speed.
    The GTR series
Buying Gran Turismo 4 for PS2 and playing it on an emulator would be the closest thing to the real deal.

    Need for Speed? Hmm....

I'm going to say check out Live for Speed... www.lfs.net , it is one of the most realistic racing sims out there. They have only licensed a few real cars and tracks, the rest don't have real names but have very similar real-life equivalents, and the physics in the game are well-regarded as one of the best.

Download the demo, and hopefully you have a wheel you can use. You can use the mouse and do alright, but it's definitely more difficult.

Actually people who play that game consider Gran Turismo to be "arcadey". I personally like both, but Live for Speed is definitely a sim racer's dream.

The closest in terms of quality & customization would be Grid...

You can't customise much in GRID but it's much better than NFS games in terms of gameplay.

    I'd recommend rFactor.

Some modes within it use a $$ system for winning races that you can use to upgrade your car, buy other cars, etc.

(note-not all car classes in rFactor have upgrade options)

It also subtracts $$ for driving like a idiot. If you do things like speed in the pit lanes or drive in the wrong direction, the game will fine you $$$.

Besides that, there are more mods (extra cars, tracks, leagues, etc, etc) for rFactor than any other racing game I know of.

FWIW, the full game is a 2GB install, but mine is currently at 16.2GB--that's 14.2GB of mods and I don't even have 1/5 of what's available.

However, if you don't own a wheel/pedal setup, forget it.

Edit--there's a demo available at their website:

    http://www.rfactor.net/

Also, be aware that rFactor is generally a race-car sim with few "normal" cars (even as mods), while Gran Turismo contains pretty much the opposite.

That game is simply awesome :). I've finished all you can do with the demo, and was contemplating whether or not to buy the S2 version. I was trying to drift with the demo cars for a while, but it's pretty hard to not lose control. I'm sure it would be awesome should you get it, but if you consider Gran Turismo too arcade-like, then you shouldn't really try any of the super-mainstream racers like the NFS series or Grid, as they don't give you a realistic feel for the cars.

Well it's not me personally. I just got Flatout 1 and 2 and I am having a blast playing it with friends. I also don't 100% agree with Gran Turismo being "arcadey". It doesn't have amazing physics like LFS, it may have too many cars, and it certainly doesn't have any damage in it, but what it does I think it does pretty well. I played GT2 to death when it came out, did almost all the endurance races and got a lot of gold's in the licenses. Good times.

It's actually the stuck-up ones who think GT is an arcade game, lol. It's not LFS, but it's pretty decent for what it is. But to each his own.

I would also say rfactor is probably good, although I've only played the demo. There are a million mods for it, but you have to pick and choose from what I hear, since there is a lot of crap available also.

I also just ordered GTR Evolution, it is Race 07 and the expansion for $9.99 off Ebay. It's supposed to be a pretty fun sim-like game, I'll let you know when it arrives and I can play it a bit.

Hmmmm, they compatible with the G25?

I picked up NFS ProStreet and Test Drive Unlimited a few weeks back, and they're ok, though they work with the H-Shifter and Clutch pretty good. Like in TDU, you can stall by accident :p

Any other suggestions? I'm prolly gonna try rFactor after my exams.

I love Test Drive Unlimited on the XBOX360. My brother and I were recently talking about buying a couple of copies of it for the PC so we could play online together more easily. It is similar to the Gran Turismo experience without being a lame copy, in my opinion. You buy cars, modify them (hardly, there are only three stages), and race. The best part about it is driving around and admiring the detailed map of the island.

TDU gets my vote. It may not be the closest thing to Gran Turismo, but it is definitely a refreshing racing experience.

IF you don't mind arcadey games, there's Need for Speed Underground 2, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights (don't be fooled, there's a bunch of muscle cars).

Those are really the only ones that allow for free-form car customization. The games everybody else are mentioning only have basic or no customization (rfactor, GRiD, lfs).

They're all GREAT games if you have a good wheel/pedal setup and don't mind a vertical learning curve.

Do you mean customization as in neon lights and decals? That's what I see you are getting at when you say customization....

Edit: I think I see what you mean. I was thinking customization as in ride height, suspension hardness, etc.... I see the OP wanted engine upgrades like in street racing, lol... NFS games are probably good for that...
