I was wondering, why an old graphic card from a PC can adjust to so many different resolution even up to 1900x1200 resolution while the new graphic card from notebook can only go up to whatever screen it has on the notebook.

Sorry if it's a silly question, but I'm no expert either
    Can anyone please explain?

The reason I was questioning this is because I want to buy a 15.4" screen with not too high resolution, maybe the highest is 1440x900. But I also want to hook it up to a 24" external LCD with 1900x1200 res and hoping that the resolution from the notebook will go up to the native resolution of the external screen.
    Can I do that?

    Thanks for the help.

A notebook can output 1920x1200 if you connect it to an external display.

But the notebook's native resolution is what will cap its output onto the LCD itself.

I have a WUXGA 1920x1200 screen, I run my Windows resolution and games at the resolution fine.

    You can do that yes.

And if you wondering, a 15.4" notebook can have up to WUXGA (1920x1200) screen.... you are not looking hard enough, because those screens are mainly on high-end gaming / business-class notebooks.

    Hi Gophn,

So are you saying that a notebook with 1280x800 native resolution can display a 1900x1200 res when connected to a 24" external LCD?

I know that there are some 15.4" notebook with WUXGA screen, what I'm asking is if it's possible to connect a 15.4" notebook with 1440x900 res or 1680x1050 res to an external screen (let's say 24" LCD wiith 1900x1200 res) and have the output displays 1900x1200 res just like the screen max res without degrading the quality?

I hook my laptops to external screens displaying up to 1080p all the time. So, unless you have a really old or strange laptop, you will be fine.

There is a setting in Display properties or maybe my ATI Catalyst that is. Display only supported resolutions. That is what is happening to you. It is a setting somewhere.

And as all said your GPU will support many resolutions. Even my IGP supports way huge ones.

    Wow, that's cool.

    Thanks guys.
I'll order the 24" external lcd monitor that I want and I'll try it with my laptop then.
Thanks again for the helps, I really appreciate it :)
I'll let you know the result.
