i'm looking to get a laptop and currently the ones i'm looking at has the Mobility Radeon HD 2400, geforce go 7600-se and the geforce go 7600.

I'm not sure which of these is the better card. i assume the se is a downclocked verson of the 7600, and i thought the 2400 was better then the 7600, but then i started seeing some bench marks then showed the 7600 being faster. now i'm confused. Any help?

The ATI HD 2400 is a newer generation of graphics than the Nvidia Geforce 7600, but the 7600 is a more powerful product line than the 2400. That means that even though it is a generation behind, it is a more powerful card.

    ATI X1000 series = Nvidia 7000 series
    ATI HD2000 series = Nvidia 8000 series
ATI HD3000 series = Refreshed Nvidia 8000 series (G-92 Version)

Within each series both Nvidia and Nvidia use a similar system of numbering. There are generally 3 different ranges of card.
The #400 version, the #600 version, and the #800 version.
Each version corresponds to a different market. The 400 would be the cheapest, while the 800 would be the most expensive.

In most cases the #600 of a series performs better or at the same level as the #400 of the next series. This is why the 2400 performs a little worse than a previous generation 7600.

The problem is that I am comparing different manufacturers which sort of adds a conditional to my argument. An additional 'possible' shift in expected performance occurs because I am not comparing cards from the same manufacturer.

In other words, the go7600 will probably perform the best out of the three you listed.

If possible, it might be worth it to upgrade to the 8600m line. Or even one of the go7900? Of course, it isn't entirely necessary, just the gamer in me pushing for more performance.

If it was possible i'd love to upgrade to a better graphic card. But I have limited funds and i'm looking for something that will atleast play current gen games, even at low settings.

Well, if by current gen you mean games running the Source Engine (Half-Life 2 games, Team Fortress 2, Portal, etc) a go7600 will run that all well.

If you are talking Crysis...eh...at all low settings definitely. COD4 probably at medium and low resolution (1024x768). Bioshock, low-medium.

Heck, if you are ok with low settings...the 7600 will get you through pretty much any of the new games!

agreed. If you're afraid that your laptop wont come in one peace, try ordering from a company with good customer service so that even if something is wrong with your laptop, you can always have it fixed. You can look on www.resellerratings.com to see which companies have good and which have bad customer service.
