Hey guys, just got a new laptop with Core2Duo T8300 (2.4Ghz) w/ a 2600 graphics card. Before this I was running a 2Ghz PM w/ a X700. That machine ran a lot hotter. After several hours of gaming my new laptop has yet to surpass 60C without a cooler while my old one would hit 60 as soon as the game finished loading(both w/o OC)! I know with previous card 70-80 is getting close to the red zone but is that the same with these newer parts or did they reduce the heat tolerance because they dont get as hot. Just wanted to check before I started to really push everything.

This question will have several answers. For me, everything above 80 will start to worry me. Others say you can hit 90.

80 is the recommended max temp. 90 is the max you should reach under special circumstances, but it should not be your load temp. 100 is the technical max (at least, for desktop GPU)

I'm idling at 54 now. Max I reached was 82. Load temp is around 75-80.

How does one find out the temperature of their GPU? I downloaded GPU-Z but I can't find if it reads temps or not.

I get the same. Maybe there is a problem with the sensor on his laptop. GPU-Z should be able to read it.

GPU-Z doesnt read my temps but HWMonitor does the trick

Thanks guys for the confirmation. Now I can overclock without reservation! :)

i idle at 35-40 (both cpu and gpu) so there should be a lot of head room for overclocking.

glad i could help. thats what we are here for.

also keep an eye on the hard drive as well as 65c is when it turns critical and will cause damage.

Everything might be running fine now, but i would be worried about possible long term damage with extended use...no sense risking damage to such a pricey peice of equipment if you ask me...(unless you're loaded, in which case you can just buy a better one when this one burns out). I get worried when my temps hit 80 but that's just me...it's "my precious" after all... ;)

The load temp on my MBP is 82 degrees Celsius with fans blasting at maximum. I have reached 93 degrees Celsius max temp before when playing Supreme Commander on dual monitors.

I just got my motherboard replaced today..... im getting the same temps in front of the technician, but they only sent a new motherboards, no new heatsink and no thermal paste, and there is no thermal paste in the gpu... so they are sending new heatsink, thermal paste, and new mobo just to make sure, so i hope this is fixed, dell is shipping the parts, and will arrive tomorrow since i have premium support for xps, and maybe tomorrow i can get this all done!... i ll let u know how it goes! this mobo gpu revision is A2... he said thep problem is fixed...

check out this app for total fan control:

    http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html

it was originally made for Dells, but it's supposed to work on most laptops, and it's supposed to be safe, since it uses a separate driver than your stock fan control.

It's got auto-speed fan settings for different scenarios, all which you can manually configure. It also measures temp of GPU, HDD and RAM (as well as CPU) if supported.

This little freeware app has been a godsend to me. But as I always tell people, you should be using a laptop cooling pad with fans no matter what! Or at least a heat-dispersion/convection pad. Heat is the #1 killer of laptop lifespans.

My 8200M GS in my Vostro idles at the 61 degrees celcius mark and the highest it has spike to was 92 degrees celcius playing WoW for about 4 hours on my 22" monitor at native resolution...pretty good!

Oh I also use a Zalman NC1000 for cooling...so I guess its a bit of a cheat - but I hardly if ever hear the Vostro fans kick in, and I run the cooler at around medium speed :D

ive got my radiators on full and the room temp is comfortable.

Idle temperatures isn't an indicator of overclocking headroom. Use an application that can stress both the CPU and GPU (FurBenchmark is an excellent one since you can run it in a window), and see what the temperatures are like with it running for at least 30 minutes.

Those are low GPU temps and high HDD temps! I get worried when my HDD hits 42C! My GPU idles at the low 50's, around 51C~56C. It maxes at 83C, but mostly stays at 77C~81C. Although I do live in a tropical country... oh, and it's overclocked quite a bit. I use a notebook cooling pad, though.

Here's mine running idle on Notepal Infinite @ Max.

Its a 7200RPM hard drive by the way, room temperature @ 29~30C

Most GPU are rated @ 105C so I guess less than that should be fine considering my hard drive is rated @ 60C (Sometimes it get over it when running but its still alive lol).
